Does anyone do woodworking?

I'm definitely a newbie and have decided to attempt a basic butcher's block. The wood I've picked up seems a funny colour and was hoping someone could advise me if I should start again with a fresh piece or just keep sanding.

I've attached pics to show what I mean - there appear to be black 'splodges' and I'm hoping it isn't some form of rot. First photo is after a quick wipe with a damp cloth and the second photo is after it dried

  • apparently the photos attached the wrong way round 🤦🏻‍♀️

The darker one is whilst it's damp

Id give it a damn good sand. Or possibly use a plane.

My dad was a woodworker and I've learnt bits through osmosis. He had an electric planer though which would have made short work of the preparation.

Thanks @soup, I've been over it again today while I had the sander out for something else and it looks mildly better but I might price up a cheap electric plane.

Thanks!

I do think rough wood takes a lot of effort to get it to "furniture" standard. It's a Labour of love!

@soup I hesitantly agree, this is my first attempt with 'raw' wood (I've previously only sanded stuff back and refinished it) and it's driving me potty!
