Would any crafty, artistic types care to talk knobs with me?

I have five knobs (3 drawer, 2 cupboard) that I would like to replace. Currently they are white, plastic, meh. I want to do them in contrasting colours / patterns, but complimenting each other, so they don't match, but they go.

But, the ones I've seen and loved are out of my price range, so I'm thinking about the best way to make something myself.

I'm thinking about perhaps covering 5 wooden balls (possibly sold at Hobbycraft?) with contrasting fabrics and then attaching them with a largish screw.

Thought I'd post and see if anyone has had success with this or similar. Or has any better ideas.

Could you do that with wooden knobs - might be cheaper (don't know how much wooden balls are)

Or you could paint instead of cover with fabric

Broccoli that sounds like a bit of a faff! Covering anything round with fabric is really hard, it all puckers up. You only need 5 knobs...have you tried Bombay Duck online? There are loads of nice ones available.

It'll still be cheaper than replacing all the cupbaords...and you can take the knobs with you if you ever move!

Do be careful googling "cheap wooden knobs"

[snurk]

Can't you paint them and then use a high gloss varnish?

Yes, it would be a faff...

I had thought of finding wooden knobs and working with those.

Or I had thought along the lines of drilling a hole in the wooden balls to tuck the fabric into, then using that hole as the screw attachment.

I shudder to think what google searches this thread will appear on.

What ones did you love that were out of your price range?

Maidamess · 01/12/2007 22:42

If the worst comes to the worst, drill a big round hole where the knob would go and just use your finger to open doors and drawers.
Or tie a bit of rope through and make rope knot handles.

Drilling and tucking fabric, securing with a screw...I hope you dextrous of finger!
