Burst seam, hand see or machine?

Hello I want to mend a fitted dress that has a burst seam that runs down the side of the torso. There is not much extra fabric to catch do you think hand sewing would be better than machine sewing? It is approx a 4 inch hole. What kind of stitch do you think would be best it’s made from cotton.

I'm responding to this, as it will bump it for you at least...if there is not enough fabric to use a sewing machine, which would be the neatest option, I would very neatly slip stitch on the outside with tiny stitches. After that, it may be an idea to zig zage the seam on the inside, to preserve the remaining seam. There may be a better idea out there... Grin

Thanks for getting back to me 😁 I’ll try machine first and see what happens.

get some of that iron on stuff used for turning hems and the like. Cut a strip to fit over the seam allowance on the inside (obviously) and iron it in place. This will reinforce the threads of the fabric and prevent it coming apart again

Is it the seam thread which has gone and the fabric is still intact, or has the fabric been pulled too?

Did you have any luck @Splishsplashimhavingabath?
