Which sewing machine?

I am really daydreaming about a new sewing machine. I don't really need one as my basic John Lewis one works well, except button holes - which give me the fear. I do some dress making, a few quilts and the odd bits and pieces.

I like this one: Janome GD8100 www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07H4W1J37/?psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it&coliid=I3BT72LYYGFUE2&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&colid=1TH00DJEZS1JQ

But this keeps coming up, never heard of the brand anyone have one? Uten Sewing Machine 2685A
www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B08PZ621JB/ref=syn_sd_onsite_mobileweb_341?psc=1&adId=20061960393003&widget=sd_onsite_mobileweb&uh_it=0e31611cee2d48b671fc310e00b7ceef_CT&qualifier=1627032208&id=3196691163423278&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8&spPl=1

(Sorry I don't know how to do the small link.)

2nd one has more features for less money but isn't a brand I know.

Happy if anyone has any alternative ideas as well. I am enjoying the research.

I had an older Janome very similar to the one you linked.
It is a good machine. I only replaced it as I needed a larger machine for quilting/more advanced features.

Janome have a good reputation.
I frequently advise friends to buy their machines.

I’ve never heard of uten.

Quite a few reviews about the needle jamming on the amazon one.

What kinds of things do you make/want to make? In terms of thickness of fabric etc.

What features do you absolutely need? Which would be nice to have?

I do like having a digital machine. Mine is a singer. I would possibly prioritise a metal body as I like a bit of weight but everyone will prioritise different things.

Can you get to a shop to try some?

MrsKJones · 24/07/2021 10:39

I have had singer and brother and the singer is by far the worst. No matter what I did it would keep jamming,. I would manage to sew 5 or 6 seams and then the whole thing would have a hissy fit and need rethreading or just refuse to work. I got a brother for Christmas and it is a dream of a machine - plus it is much quieter than my singer

I've got a Brother LS1400 and its great

HaroldMeeker · 24/07/2021 10:53

I'm a dressmaker designer, and I'd suggest you try machines before you buy, just to see if you like them. I have a basic Brother (£80 ish) for students to use, as well as a brother nx600 and an even higher spec machine that I use daily (Janome mc6700p).

The basic brother is lovely. A really solid little machine that, in all truthfulness, I could actually do most of my work on. The fancier machines are smoother, quieter, more luxurious, but they still just sew at the end of the day.

I'd personally go for an easily available brand, if only to make servicing, replacing parts and buying accessories and presser feet easier. You know they'll fit and work.

Thanks all.

As for what I want. One step button holes is a must and I would like to be able to sew thicker fabric easier. My John Lewis is fine for most but struggles with multiple lays of thick fabric.

I do some quilting but have found that ok on the JL machine but a bit more gap between needle and body would be nice.

Probably will be a Christmas present to myself so lots of wonderful time researching.

I have a Brother and it's much better than the Singer I had. Sewing machines direct have a good website for comparing. Excellent customer service too Smile

Frenchfancy · 24/07/2021 16:51

I recommend the Janome. I have a different model, bought from sewing machines direct who I highly recommend.

One step buttonholes are a game changer.

Jins · 24/07/2021 16:57

Brother HF7 strong and tough might be worth a look
Brother HF27 Strong & Tough, Heavy Duty Electronic Sewing Machine. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01KVH3WVK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_XVFXT80NXCGY27XV9NVT?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

One step button hole, automatic needle threading and heavy duty. Not a machine for embroidery

VorpalSword · 26/07/2021 09:24

I do a bit of free flow quilting so looking for something that can do that as well.

I'm very much enjoying looking.

Hope it's still relevant! I had basic Janome 54s for 7 years. The machine is fine and good for beginners as me 7 years ago. However, if you want something advanced I can recommend you choose something from Brother line www.craftyhangouts.com/best-brother-sewing-machine/. I've just purchased the HC1850 4 months ago. I have really improved my sewing skill with this machine. And the quality of my clothes is better as well. A small comment to what you linked: I would not buy the second linked machine as I do not trust unknown brands. Only, if someone with enough experience would recommend me, I would consider it.
AnnieSnap · 18/12/2021 22:29

@VorpalSword I too am thinking of buying a machine. My first and I have no previous experience! I don’t want to spend a fortune, obviously (given the whole sewing thing is new to me), but I’d like one that isn’t too basic, with at least an auto needle threader and bobbin winder. I also briefly considered the ‘turn, but dismissed it based on the reviews. After much browsing, I’d settled on this one www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08KQFZHK9/ref=ox_sc_act_title_9?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&psc=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21
That said @SuperLoudPoppingAction link to the Singer Outlet (I didn’t now they had one), means more research for me!
