Candle making

I’m finally going to give candle making a go, soy wax.
Just interested in seeing how others have got along with making their candles and any tips/advice greatly appreciated 😀

From my experience, you'll need a lot of patience. Like... A LOT Grin.
I've tried making candles and I even had high hopes to sell stuff if it goes well but it never did, the wax would never congeal properly and the form would be destroyed all the time. That's how I decide I'm better off doing digital crafts like Smartshow 3d videos and photo calendars lol. I enjoy others sharing their works, tho!

@Sweetener12 Thank you, with two little people I’ve learnt to be very patient Grin so hopefully won’t be too much of a problem. Can I ask did you try a workshop or just give a go at home. I’m aware there are a lot of online courses and tutorials available.
Thanks again.

I used to make them in tea cups or other China containers. You need a double boiler (or simply two pots, one on top of the other). All items very clean so nothing gets in to your wax, wax flakes work best. Wicks that have the metal bottom thread through and held in place I used wooden cocktail sticks with the wick taped between two. It’s best not to do in an area with drafts so that when cooking it is done slowly as that avoids any cracking on the surface or away from edge of receptacle. I would put the scent in the receptacle prior to pouring in the wax. Once completely cooled and wax hardened, trim off excess wick. On candle sites, you can read up on size of wicks so you have the correct size wick (diameter) or is making a large candle, the number of wicks needed for even burn.

@LongTimeMammaBear thank you!
Yes, I bought a double boiler and going to use soy wax. Ok, wax flakes, I give this a go!
For now I will experiment with it all and the scent. I just worry I won’t put enough in and therefore it won’t be fragrant but I suppose it all comes with practice.
I think of using small glass jars and tea cups to start off with them will explore more.
Oooh I’m getting excited about it all.

Do you make candles for yourself or to sell?

I made them to sell, for myself and I used to do classes too. The candle websites also give advice about how much scent for amount of wax. You could err on side of caution and add more (rather than too little).

@Fuchsiaflipflops I've been out for several days and haven't noticed your question, sorry! I had a candle making kit which was a Christmas gift from a colleague and decided to give it a try and see whether it plays out fine. Lo and behold, it didn't. The kit was really big and gave me about 2 or 3 attempts and I tried Youtube tutorials, too, but it never really worked out for me.

I throughly enjoyed this process, found it fun!
The candles turned out better than I expected. Going to experiment more with scents and holders.

How are others coming along?
