I'm not much of a jangly jewellery person but it looks like the sort of thing many of my friends would buy. I've no idea what they'd pay.

The black & white charm is particularly nice.

Well done!

Whizzz · 22/11/2007 21:04

oo pretty colours! Pricing is soooo hard (I'm useless at it!). You have to cover costs but I find it depends on who you are aiming to sell to & whether you are just funding more beads or trying to build a business. It's hard to compete with high street shops selling cheap stuff unless you can offer some unique-ness.

mistypeaks · 22/11/2007 21:07

I would pay 10 for the bracelet (and am considering it!!!). I've only seen a few bag charms I would buy before and usually think about 5/6 is reasonable. They're really good.

melsy · 22/11/2007 21:16

Gorgeous, very pretty , but not twee. Definately will do well. You go girl xxx

LOL - oo yes, you'd have to pay me for each one you make . Actually, I haven't made any for a while I've been sidetracked by seed beads.

I actually bought one that someone else had made at the weekend !

ChinaSurprise · 22/11/2007 22:30

'Lo. Just thought I'd comment as I sell quite a lot of my own jewellery.
I'd say you should charge more.
It's tempting to under charge, because you're thinking "the materials were cheap, it wasn't that hard" but (trust me on this) if you make a lot of the same design you soon get a bit sick of it, so it's worth factoring in for your time too.
As long as the quality of the finish is neat and professional looking (which only takes a bit of practice) I think £12 as a minimum for your bracelets, as that design is quite a fiddly one. I'd charge £8 for the brooch and £9 for the charm.

You can have a look at my designs here to get an idea of comparison. I do earrings and bracelets for £8 to £20 and necklaces from £12 to £30. (I'm not pitching for sales, just trying to help!)

Also, some advice re what sells, if you're selling in a shop or at a craft fair bracelets are good. Bag charms are better for younger markets - eg school Christmas fair. Brooches aren't as popular.

But I'm not trying to discourage you - your designs are good!
I can't tell how you've fixed the charms, but if you're using a simple loop it's not that secure - try using a wrapped loopif you're not already - they only take a little practice - and good luck with it all!

LilRedWG · 23/11/2007 11:07

Well done! I love the memory charm.

ChinaSurprise · 23/11/2007 11:08

Hello again.
Just to say I love the new red and white bracelet - you've definitely got a good eye.
As for the pricing, I hope you'll eventually listen to your hubby - especially as I bet end up spending whatever you make on more beads/ equipment - if you charge a decent amount you can expand your repertoire and your collection all the time, rather than just sticking to one thing.
I started out with a small set of beads and equipment, now I buy stock from all over the world and keep my kit in a giant multi-layered sewing box. I've sold entire collections of work to local shops - charging them £12.50 to £15 for necklaces, which they then sell on for £35 to £40 (!!!). The materials for some of these necklaces are as low as £5, but the time they take to make can be anything between 20 minutes and 2 hours - this is why I think adding on time costs is worth it.
I charge my friends slightly lower rates but I still make sure I cover my materials costs and something towards my time. Earlier this year I got an order for 20 necklaces - the first three were fun but by the end it did feel like a factory production line!
I'd also encourage you to look at that loop technique I mentioned (you can see the end result on the earrings on my flickr page) - otherwise you'll find that charms will eventually come off your beautiful bracelets, no matter how tight you make the single loops - they just work themselves loose. You can also solder jump rings to make them complete and prevent charms coming off or getting caught in the split in the jump ring.
I'm glad you're being so imaginative already - that's the best attitude you can take - keep experimenting and try beading websites or mags for new ideas - sometimes they come up with technical stuff you'll never work out on your own.
Finally, I don't know what surface you're using to lay everything out, but these boards are brilliant as they stop everything rolling around and you can also measure out designs more easily.
Keep posting your pix!

Hi there, another jewellery maker here I agree with the other good advice you've been given, you have taken the time and effort to make something unique and handmade then you should charge a little extra for that too.
Ok you can pick up jewellery quite cheaply now,but all that jewellery is made in china, like a conveyor belt, whereas your jewellery will be a 'one-off' and that make's it unique.
Obviously if you ,in the future, get multiple orders from one place for items then the unique -ness disappears abit.

This is a very interesting and informative site...helped me alot when I was in a quandry about pricing my designs.

Good luck and enjoy jewellery making I love it.

dare i ask if anyone likes the turquoise ribbon necklace im brave

OP posts:
mistypeaks · 23/11/2007 22:04

ok you're brave. I'm honest . . . I think the 2 beaded bits nearest the clasps need to go. I do really like the ribbon though. Have you tried doing the half "traditional" necklace 'tied up' with ribbon design. At the back where it 'ties' add a bead or 2 there? Does that make sense. I can 'see' jewellery design in my head I just can't do it!!
