I need to make a dress for a not huge toy stuffed dog.it’s too small for eg buying from that shop.
I need to devise a simple pattern & my heads just boxed with it.
A five year olds faith in mummy is at stake! I have fat quarters to work with which is definitely enough fabric.
Sleeves have been requested, but I’m prepared to abandon those.
I’ve tried drawing onto paper, but it’s not mapping very well.
I will at least be hand sewing it.
Any ideas?

Can we see a picture of the toy in question? Preferably with something for scale

Knittedfairies · 16/05/2021 20:58

Can you post a picture of said not huge stuffed dog, with some idea of size?

Disclaimer - this is not something I have ever done!
Could you make the garment ON the dog, a bit like they do in the improvisation challenge, or whatever it is called, on a mannequin on the GB Sewing Bee?
So pin your fat quarters round him, even sew some seams in situ, maybe, then cut right along the fabric under the belly and undress him. You could add a button or two and a loop under there to fasten it back on.

This is a magazine page about a4 sized

Thank you for answering, just writing it down helped a bit!
I’ve found some old rag fabric I can play with too which is easier than paper.
Making it on the dog had been what I’d planned to do, but I don’t seem to have enough hands & can’t risk nipping the dog with scissors.

Honestly I wonder if I’m just too tired for this, a moment ago I could visualise what shape I needed & then it vanished & I can’t see it again.

Hope you can see the pic.
Thank you , thank you.

Can you use jersey fabric? I’ve made some terrible but functional* soft toy clothes out of old t shirts in similar emergency situations - literally cutting some vague shapes, sewing together and relying on the stretch to get them on.

*I mean, there obviously is no function, but you want your child to be able to get them on and off the dog

There are teddy bear clothes patterns on Pinterest, including a few freebies, if they are any use.

Well I’ve made a little progress. It looks a bit like a Victorian pinny

Something like this would be easily adapted

Fireweeds · 16/05/2021 21:52

Yes that’s the kind of thing I was hoping for, but jinxed because it’s arms come out the front not the sides if that makes sense?
Definitely an idea to have shoulder fastenings.
I will have another bash tomorrow just being able to talk it through has really helped! I have to do another one after for youngest’s similar toy.
Sigh.

I'd probably just make an A-line type shape and them cut holes where the arms/legs come out. Could then add a button or snap fastening at the back neck and a little
opening so can get on and off.

Looks like you're making good progress. So glad there are others who have similar requests - I had to make a monkey a shirt this weekend!
