I am a basic knitter (cast on/off, plain purl, slip, yarn over, basic cable.....) and have promised my DD a scark for her new winter coat.....any good ideas? We bought some wool today in John Lewis which she chose(Peter Pan double knitting, needle size 4mm). Got to be easy to follow and quick-ish to knit!

is it a variegated or otherwise interestingly-coloured yarn? i made a so called scarf for my dd and it's a really impressive looking result for a very simple pattern. no worrying about curly edges either.

How about moss stitch - it won't curl up and you can add tassles if you want to. I also think that just plain knit looks lovely too.

you are a more advanced knitter than me, I haven't done any yo yet, though i have been learning to do basic cabeling. I like the look of just a plain knit scarf, but you could always add a bit of detail to make it special for your dd, like a knitted flower or a few little beads. I knit a scarf for a friend awhile ago and added a little pocket with a button detail to make it a little special. I liked it anyway and so did she. firefly scarf but I know there are alot of very talented people that might have some better ideas. I'm sure it will turn out great.

I always do mine in 3x2 rib, especially if you have nice wool, although moss stitch doesn't curl like st st, I still find it doesn't completely lie flat properly iyswim, a rib will behave as regards curling at the edges.
