Art ideas for 10 month old

Does anyone have any suggestions for good crayons to get for my 10 month old? Obviously I know he won't draw yet but want to give him a go.

Any other ideas for art supplies that are particularly good for young babies? I have no idea!

Thanks :-)

Crayola twistables. Brilliant for babies as they won't snap

That's a good idea! Sounds safer. Although would something more chunky be easier for him to hold do you think?

Would something like this be good.as they are chunky? They are quite expensive though, not sure if they are worth it?

Or maybe marker pens as he won't need to push down so hard?

We had art sessions booked in starting the beginning of this year but that'll need to wait till after lockdown 😕

We used this type for early years, but didn't start as early as ten months.

I don't like twist up crayons as very easy to snap/bite, crayons can be easily eaten so have to watch carefully!

These are great. Really chunky and do not break. You can get larger or smaller packets with more or fewer crayons.

Don’t get the twistables. You want something chunky and short as this helps little ones to develop their pencil grip. Mine are 4 and 2 now and both still use the woodys ones v happily.

TierFourTears · 07/03/2021 07:17

Dont get the twistables.
I'd go for something like these if the link you've already found is too expensive - but I'd say you are on the right track.

Also, washable paint, and just let them loose with their hands and the paint. Cover the table with a bin liner first!

We use egg crayons with my 18 month old, works quite well now, but she couldn't really use them until about 14 months. Maybe try some other mark making? Draw with fingers in sand/flower, paint if you don't mind mess, snickers (with you peeling), sticking paper bits/sparkles on to a pre-glued page

FusionChefGeoff · 07/03/2021 07:35

Paint is awesome for early mark making and I preferrred markers at that age as you get a nice clear line with even the lightest touch whereas I always thought crayons needed quite a lot of motor control to get a decent result.

Lots of nurseries do play in shaving foam and sand (not together!) as that's another easy way to get mark making going. So spread foam in a tray and use fingers to make patterns in the foam.

FreesiaFairy · 07/03/2021 11:54

Some great ideas there, thanks!

Will try the shaving foam this week.

Do you think this paint would be ok, if I try to not let him eat too much?

Any suggestions on the markers?

Like the glue and sparkly bits idea Smile

Will also get some of the woody ones too!

They would both be fine if it's just the odd lick, or if you're worried you can make eat safe paint with cornflour, water and food colouring.
