Hi all,
I'm just womdering if you could give me some help here.

I've been making things from recycled paper and recently posted one on eBay. I the got an ASQ to see if I would be willing to make them for her to sell in her shop. ((woo hoo, very exciting) Now she wants to know how much I will sell them to her for. I'm stuck!! How much would you pay for these? Pics should be in my profile (hopefully)

The small newspaper bag cost about £5 to make, the largeer bag about £7.50 and the box only a couple of quid. Give me a clue please.

How long do they take to make?

iesha · 02/11/2007 16:23

the large bag about 6 hours, minus varnishing time,

You want to make some money for your time but charging £4 per hour and the cost of the bag would charging £31.50 which is alot of money if the shop need to mark up the price. You really need to decide how much your time is worth.

iesha · 02/11/2007 16:36

its not really a chore to make, so not overly worried about being oaid for my time, how aboiut doubling the price of costing?

do you know what type of shop it is? location? clientele? might help if you are trying to work out how much she will be asking for them

PrincessGoodLife · 02/11/2007 16:39

btw they are very funky indeed
what's the top one made of?

iesha · 02/11/2007 16:42

I don't know anything about the shop except that it's eco/green so sells only green items. They're all made from paper, the top one is old magazines and junk mail, the middle one is news paper and the box is wall paper

Thanks for the compliment princess

The handles are currently being recycled from old bags too, but I'll soon run out of bags to pull apart. lol

do you make stuff out of plastic bags too?
I'm sure there was a mention of something like that, and a link, on here sometime this year...

PrincessGoodLife · 02/11/2007 16:44

hah - psychic!

iesha · 02/11/2007 16:46

No yet, princess, but it is an idea I was playing with. The handles are actually being taken from old handbags that I dont use anymore. I was thinking of posting on free cycle asking for old bags to use the handles from

I think the link I saw had bags woven out of plastic bags, not dissimilar to yours.

iesha · 02/11/2007 16:53

yeah, i seen them b4 too, dont need varnishing either so might be quicker to make

I would expect this sort of thing to be priced at:

£12-15 for the smaller bag
£15-20 for the larger bag
£10-12 for the box

retail prices that is, obviously you would have to sell them to the shop for a bit less so that they can mark it up

they look great by the way!

iesha · 02/11/2007 20:02

thanks, bueller, that's really helpful. I had no idea where to start pricing them. And thanks for the compliment.

Does anyone else have an idea on how much you would pay for them?

OP posts:
WhizzzBangWhizzz · 03/11/2007 11:06

I'd say to aim to ask a bit more - the top end or a couple of pounds more than Buellers pricing. That's what you would sell them to the shop for.
6 hours on an item is quite a long time - if you also have to incur costs in the future for sourcing the handles for example - you should aim to count these costs in too now rather than having to up your price later (or take a hit in less profit). It depends really whether you are looking to run a proper business or just a paying hobby to cover your costs.

WhizzzBangWhizzz · 03/11/2007 11:07

and I must add - they are great by the way !
Would woven belts work too or would they be too stiff ?? The colours would be quite cool!

iesha · 05/11/2007 13:24

Thanks whizzz, I've decided to try to make my own handles as they seem to be quite expensive to buy. I've been scouring ebay for leather jackets that I can cut up, I can get a jacket for less than £10 and should be able to make loads of handles from it, it also keeps with the recycled theme.

I think belt would be too stiff, but I was thinking about ribbon as a shopper style bag.

I would love to do this as a business, but it will always be a hobby too, which is why I'm not too bothered about being paid for time. I do want to make a profit though

taek the cost of the raw materials and then think of how long it took and do an hourly rate
