Clamp stand or roller for cross stitch?

I've been considering getting a floor or lap stand to do cross stitch - holding a hoop is getting uncomfortable now I'm working on more complicated patterns and swapping back and forth between holding the hoop and checking the pattern is a faff too, so hands free would be much better.

I'd been looking for one that I could clamp the hoop to, but I keep seeing wooden tapestry frames that have rollers as part of the frame (and the floor standing ones are much cheaper than the clamp stands.) Can anyone advise on the pros and cons? Do the roller stands work for cross stitch as wells tapestry? I don't want to spend a fortune if I don't need to but there's no point in buying a cheaper stand I don't use.

I prefer the frames, you have access to a bigger area of your project and there are no hoop marks. Elbessee clip frames are very reasonably priced, as are their stands.

Meant to say, I use these for cross stitch.

Thanks, I'll look out for those.

Roller stands are usually used for tapestries done in tent stitch, because otherwise the canvas distorts and slants. If you are doing Berlin woodwork tapestry cross stitch you don't need any support.

I don't have a stand but like the plastic clip frames, you can get big ones so aren't having to constantly move the hoop around and I find I can fold my pattern to the section I'm working on and just sit it on the frame for bigger projects. I think I paid less than 15 pound on amazon for a huge one.

I swear by needle needs millennium frame. It’s very expensive but worth it

I just use a q snap frame that I hold, but a lot of people I know swear by the Lowery stand. You can hold any sort of hoop of frame in the clamp and the base slides under a sofa so that your stitching is directly in front of you.

@RobinHumphries I have the needle needs stand and frame too - excellent to work with, but delivery can take a while.
