How to crochet this?

I haven’t had a crochet project for a few years but I saw these placemats and feel inspired to give them a go! Anyone care to take a look and tell me what stitch they are? I’m going to have a go but any pointers gratefully received!

Could be totally wrong but they just look like a single crochet (US) / double crochet (UK) to me, with a gradual increase to make the circular shape.

MILdesperandum · 13/02/2021 08:46

I thought it must be simple! Would it be a case of just trial and error with the increase or is there some magic formula?!

I'd say it's back post double crochet. There is a simple formula, not sure if I'll get it right but just google crochet a circle. I know it's first round 2DC in every stitch, next round 1DC, 2DC next stitch, next round 1DC, 1DC, 2DC etc...

MILdesperandum · 13/02/2021 08:51

Thanks both!

🙂 looking again, actually think @notreallybotheredaboutausernam is right, they look like back loop double crochets. Hope they turn out alright, they look like a nice idea!

PinkTinsel99 · 14/02/2021 19:09

This is the effect you get with back loop double crochet, using the 2dc 2dc, 1dc 2dc, 1dc 1dc 2dc, etc method mentioned by notreallybothered. The 2dc create the spoke effect radiating out from the centre.
To me it looks more like a chain made using very chunky yarn which has been sewn into a spiral.

I worked it out - after some Googling! It’s double crochet in the third loop! Slip stitch the third loop for the final round. The pattern looks right but I’m not happy with my yarn choice, need to look again at what’s out there

3rd loop crochet is a PITA. Just saying!

PinkTinsel99 · 15/02/2021 03:48

Ah, well done MILdesperandum! Never heard of 3rd loop crochet but I like the effect.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/02/2021 09:44

But l think it’s finger knitting sewn together. I can’t see any increase stitches at all. So l don’t think it’s crochet.

MrsPernicious · 15/02/2021 09:49

Does look like crochet chain sewn into a spiral.
Half double crochet (US) into the third loop gives a similar look.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/02/2021 10:03

But I’ve looked again and the strips are connected by loops to the strip below, so it’s been crocheted and not sewn.

I think it’s a chain that’s crocheted together as it goes along ( like a snail shell) Thetes definitely no increases, so that’s all it can be?

I think it's chain that's been spiralled up and sewn...back loop only is an utter pita and I think would not be so likely to lie as flat.

This is my first attempt. I think the pattern looks ok but the cord I am using seems way too thick!

Although saying that the original photo also uses very thick yarn!

MrsPernicious · 15/02/2021 17:52

Oh well done.
What yarn did you use?

I was just making a sample from slightly stringy DK cotton/viscose yarn. Needs softer stuff. I think chunky T-shirt yarn would probably make a nice place mat.

MILdesperandum · 15/02/2021 18:01

I used this www.hobbycraft.co.uk/knitcraft-mustard-return-of-the-mac-yarn-200g/641863-1004
It’s very stiff! Possibly could have gone up a hook size but 6.5mm is the largest I have

That looks good. Although if you want a totally invisible hole in the middle start with a magic circle rather than a chain of 4.
