If I'm doing a frill on a full circle skirt should it be cut on a curve or straight?

I've done so many ruffles for this show I'm mind blown!

Do I cut a donut shape or do I ruffle a straight piece?

I'm no seamstress, but I'd assume one would use a straight piece of fabric and gather it as you go round?

(If I hadn't squabbled with my DM on FT yesterday I could have asked her ...)

KatyMac · 07/02/2021 08:11

Oh dear, I hope you make up

Several (real life) sewers agree with you, which conflicts with a Google article

But I'm going to go with straight as there are now 4 votes for straight and none for curved (plus straight is much more economical with fabric and I hate waste)

Thanks

I'm sure on sewing bee someone cut a spiral for an extra frilly frill, so very curved but no waste.

KatyMac · 07/02/2021 11:34

That tallies with the Google search i did

But I may still do the easier one Blush

Urgh, rather you than me!

KatyMac · 07/02/2021 14:05

Rather anyone than me - its a bugger of a job.....left and right matching is hard but making 2 dresses the same? Nightmare!

Blue done (×2)
White done (x2)

Having massive problems with the shape of the skirt in the video and the fact that the dress is wrapped around

Someone suggested this method- any comments or suggestions?

No suggestions - but I had been wondering how you're getting on!

(Idle curiosity - given the cost of fabric and your labour - is it really cheaper and easier to make rather than buy? Or are you doing it out of love for the activity?)

KatyMac · 12/02/2021 08:22

The entire thing is made from pre-loved or vintage fabrics

The blue is a set of cafe tablecloth I picked up from the local charity shop before it closed down for £10 enough ro make the 2 dresses

The white layered skirts were a double sheet - I cut carefully skimming an inch or 3 from the lower layers to make it fit without sacrificing too much swirl (eg bottom tier was 190 inches rather than 196)

I picked up 120 purple feathers from eBay for £25 for the carnival costume (which has been a bugger but is starting to come together) and uses a pan lid stand and pipe insulation plus some bungies for its base backpack

My god mum gave me a 1948 (I think) suit her seamstress aunty gave her in the early 80s so we have used that (struggling with a suitable top) - when I sent her pictures she told her sister, and all of a sudden we had a parcel of 1960s/70s dresses from Barbados - which have been invaluable for research reasons alone

Another friend turned up post lockdown 1.0 with all the spare costumes, props, silks and backdrop cloths from her photo studio that shut down (retirement rather than covis thankfully)

It has been eye-opening to receive such kindness - everyone really cares about reusing/slow fashion

So far I have bought thread new, and some poppers! I just picked up some glue sticks and some extra elastic on eBay but they were both 'used so I guess surplus to requirements

I'll get the cost of everything i spent plus something towards making them. The Arts Council is keen on people being paid their worth but also contributing to their art

And tbh having something to concentrate on during lockdowns has been fab without any markets and fairs there is only so much I can make and store until I can start selling again - online hasn't worked well for me 😁 (plus I am being semi paid to make mistakes and start again, so learning all the time - this cuba dress for example - 6 hrs of unpicking all of which happened while watching pride and prejudice, a series of unfortunate events and 'the dig' as a family!)

Fascinating project.

And (you won't need me to tell you) the creation of the costumes sounds as compelling as the eventual show. Is documenting the process (all those histories!) part of the project? If not, it should be.

KatyMac · 12/02/2021 09:01

It wasn't but typing it all here i am wondering if I should 'present' it somehow; originally a short paragraph about each costume in the programme (as it was intended for stage, with most costume changes on stage) isn't appropriate with it now being a film

So maybe a fb page or a blog might work with the link in the credits on you-tube - to be honest I'm not sure how it will be launched just when....Windrush Day (we hope)

It was really useful to me to write it all down and there is so much more!! Thanks 😊

I'm an eco designer
My daughter is a dancer, choreographer and now film maker
Doing the costumes for her project was assumed by all
Being paid for it a massive bonus as I have done it all her life
But, I do think, it will progress my career i hope

I'm suitably impressed at her Arts Council success.

(Have PM-ed you, btw.)

KatyMac · 12/02/2021 09:51

So were we to be honest! First attempt too.....

There will be an online programme apparently - I just found out

More ruffles!!

The orange/blue were 'silks' from the photo studio

The green an old tablecloth and a remnant from a dress I made in 2015

& the white/blue underskirt won't be worn under the green check we were just checking for movement and length (it was too long) - the white was an old flannel sheet and the blue used to be ceiling hangings at my nursery

@KatyMac

Do I cut a donut shape or do I ruffle a straight piece?

You're talking ruffle vs flounce. Ruffle is the straight one which you gather and flounce is the donut one which ripples when you straighten it. Unless you want to cut a load of donuts I'd do a ruffle for a skirt hem because it's a lot of distance to cover.
KatyMac · 13/03/2021 09:18

Aw thanks @BeagleEagle, but im all done now (apart from picking sleeve shapes)

Def straight ruffles!!
