Help with mending

I bought a top and ripped it getting out of the bag and taking off the tag. The material is very thin and I have seen it but it looks crap. Any advice on what should do ? Its quite small about 1.5cm but I am obsessing about what to do. :( pic below.

I'm not sure there is a lot you can do as, if you unpicked your attempt at mending, there wouldn't be a lot of edge to knit together with a ladder stitch without pulling it out of shape.

And, looking at the line of the Jersey, it's going to twist out of shape on its first wash, anyhow. It's really wonky. If it was mine, I'd only wear it in the house or with a cardi or coat over it.

Ladder stitch, if you do wNt to give it a try en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ladder_stitch

Hide it:

with a fancy label or piece of trim

With a fake lace collar

With a sew on patch with a brand name on it

With a trendy hanging tab/loop on the outside

Or a Leather strap applied with studs.

nitgel · 15/01/2021 11:25

Oh no :( I will have to live with it. Maybe I will see what its like after washing

I was wondering about hiding it

Do you have a sewing machine or a pal who has one?

They always leave a professional tight line of stitches so if you even tack on a bit of ribbon and ask her to see it on it could hide it and look professional?

nitgel · 15/01/2021 12:33

No Grin I don't think i know anyone who has a machine. I would have to hand stitch. Would do a better job than my previous attempt maybe. Will he to wait for hobbycraft to open to see what they have.

Thank you all.

Just had a thought, you know the trim you can buy by the metre, there’s one that looks like daisies. That would cover the repair old stitches and hide your own new stitches to attach. Just cut off a couple of daisies and sew in place. If you can get a similar colour it won’t be noticeable. Or make a feature and see individual ones right round the neckline too about two inches apart.

AdaColeman · 15/01/2021 15:57

It looks as though it's close to the neckline? If it is, perhaps get an artificial silk flower or a small bunch of artificial flowers and sew them in place to camouflage the tear, use small light flowers as the material seems delicate and anything heavy will pull it out of shape.

AdaColeman · 15/01/2021 16:06

I've enlarged your picture now, it's at the back of the garment isn't it? So my flower idea won't work. Also the fabric is knitted not woven, so more difficult to repair.
If you turn it inside out, are there any long pieces of the yarn you could trim off and use for the repair? Then you would have an exact colour match.

I'd carefully unpick your repair and see if you could pick up stitches to knit the tear together. What a pity, as it's such a lovely colour!

nitgel · 15/01/2021 17:06

i don't think there are extra yarns, when the shops open again i will try and get an exact colour match maybe so it won't show up as much? and yes it's at the back.

Press it flat so the edges meet as closely as possible. Then get some fusible interfacing and fuse a tiny patch to the back to hold it. You could then reinforce with some tiny stitches if needed.

NotMeNoNo · 15/01/2021 17:52

You can buy fusible interfacing online from ebay, get lightweight. Or Hobbycraft are doing click and collect if you can't wait.

nitgel · 16/01/2021 07:40

Notmeme I will get some and maybe try that. I am worried I might burn the material tho

NotMeNoNo · 16/01/2021 08:24

What is the material type on the label? Use 2 dots setting and a little steam you should be fine. Pressing is quite normal for sewing, honest.

nitgel · 18/01/2021 07:22

It's 100percent cotton

OP posts:
NotMeNoNo · 18/01/2021 15:34

OK, you will be unlikely to burn it in that case.
