I tried to learn years ago....and again later....and gave it one more try.

FAILED every time.

So, I just took delivery of a lovely set of hooks, I’m determined this time! Wish me luck.

Good luck Felicity! What are you going to start with? A granny square?

lazylinguist · 13/01/2021 18:48

You can do it, Felicity ! Come and join us on the Knit, Crochet and Natter thread . Lots of support there if you get stuck!

Bella Coco on YouTube is good. Just remember you can unravel and start again.

Good luck! It’s fun when you get the hang of it.

Hello! I have just started a crochet project - never done it before. Can I hijack and ask for a bit of advice?

I am making a Peanuts Woodstock which works up in the round. After lots of tries and restarting I have finally managed to do a decent magic circle/ magic ring. I have ploughed on and have done about 13 rows now, inserting stitches to expand it.

Was feeling quite confident until I just read something online about moving from one row to the next. I have just been keeping going at the ‘end’ of the row, staring the next set of stitches for the new row when I’ve done the last stitch of the row. I just read something that I think suggests that at the end of a row you should do a slip stitch to ‘raise up’ (my words) to start the next row.

Can anyone help? If this latter bit is correct does it matter that I haven’t done it so far, or do I need to undo what I’ve done so far?

VintageDressmaker · 17/01/2021 11:43

I think I have found the answer! Basically it doesn’t matter - depends what look you’re going for. For what I am doing, it is better to be in a spiral rather than concentric circles.

lazylinguist · 17/01/2021 11:55

VintageDressmaker - it would make that clear in the pattern. So for example when you're doing something like a blanket, where you're doing straight row after row,if you're about to do a row of treble stitches, the pattern for that row will say something like "3ch (counts as one treble), 1tr into each remaining stitch of the previous row." The initial 3ch is to 'raise up' to the height of the following trebles.

VintageDressmaker · 17/01/2021 13:55

Thanks lazy doesn’t say anything like that so assume I am right to spiral...

lazylinguist · 17/01/2021 16:04

I expect so, yes. I've never crocheted a toy/figure type pattern, but I can imagine that the construction would be quite different. I'm relatively new to crochet (compared with knitting). There are lots of very knowledgeable crocheters on the Knit, Crochet and Natter threads if you ever have any other queries.

Crochet is all about counting and practice. Try a granny square and go slowly. Crocheting is so comforting!

YodaBabe · 16/02/2021 19:11

Can I ask what you need as novice to crocheting?

I used to as a child but looking for some to relax with

CodMouth · 19/02/2021 02:16

A crochet hook, a 4 or 5mm hook should be fine.
Some yarn, a light coloured dk (double knit).
You can use a hair clip or a piece of different coloured yarn as a stitch marker if you don’t have any.
