I really want to try knitting socks, bit I have no idea where to start. I can crochet anything, but knitting socks is what I feel calling me! I've googled and pintrested, but confused myself even more....double ended needles, hooped needles, toe up or down....I wish I hadn't started Confused does anyone have an idiot's guide please?

Head over here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/arts_and_crafts/4117459-Knit-Crochet-and-Natter-into-2021

And @lazylinguist will recommend the 'Getting Started with Socks' book by Ann Budd. She's been "banging on about it" 😂

Ive no idea - I can't knit.

Knitting with open ended needles is no different from ordinary needles, except that instead of knitting in rows you're knitting in rounds.

Say you have 30 stitches in all but instead of a rectangular piece (which would need a seam if made into a tube) you want to knit it with no seams. You cast on 24 sts as normal but then divide them onto 3 open ended needles. Take another open needle and start knitting the first 10 onto the empty needle, then knit the next 10 (from the 2nd needle) onto the newly empty needle - and so on. Once you've knitted all 30 from all 3 needles, that's one round, same as one row would be. Keep going and you'll have a seamless tube in no time.

Maybe have a practice making a few little tubes so you're comfortable with the technique, then get stuck in to those socks!

Don't be put off by reading the instructions in advance. Just start knitting and then follow each instruction carefully as it arises. It will all make much more sense once you have got the knitting under way.
I remember the first time I knitted a pair of socks (at the time, I was new to knitting) and was surprised that it wasn't half as as tricky as I thought it would be. Smile

Sorry for the error! When I said "You cast on 24 sts as normal but then divide them onto 3 open ended needles" that should say "30 stitches" of course!

Try this tutorial:

That's where I started with socks. You can use DPNs, but I hate them! You can get short circular needles just for socks, but I find they give me cramp after a while. Otherwise, try magic loop on a long circular needle. Loads of online tutorials to help with that.

Look for Winwick Mum, blog and Facebook page, as her instructions for basic socks are a good place to start.

Beware though, it's very addictive!

I made these as my first attempt at socks and they were fab! Because you adapt the pattern to fit as you go you can use any yarn you like. www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/lifestyle-toe-up-socks---no-swatch-needed
