Beginner Knitter Help Please!

My mum has decided she wants to take up knitting and she hasn't done it for 35 years so very much a beginner/improver. I had planned to pop to Hobbycraft this week but Tier 4 had put a stop to that so I'll need to order some stuff online, even if it means it will arrive after Christmas. I'm looking to get some nice wooden needles and some decent chunky wool. I'd really appreciate any recommendations as it's difficult to order without being to check out quality in person. I'm not looking for top of the range stuff but also not stuff that falls apart the second you cast it on 😄

I love using the Knitpro Symfonie wooden needles, they look pretty and are lovely to use, see here I've not bought from this supplier but hopefully you can see what they look like.

I like the Knitpro Symfonie needles as well. In terms of chunky wool, what type of things do you think she wants to knit? I quite like Paintbox Chunky as an all-rounder, but it is acrylic.

I actually learnt to knit with this kit, though, and the company has a lot of other kits. They’re a bit pricy but look like they’ll deliver before Christmas. It’s lovely (actual) wool as well. www.stitchandstory.com/collections/sale/products/stripey-blankie-knitting-kit

Stylecraft is a great brand of yarn very reasonably priced, it is artificial fibre but it's soft, washes well and knits easily without the fibres pulling apart or fluffing up.

I'd recommend a pair of 4mm knitpro symphonie needles and stylecraft double knit wool (Dk).

It's not chunky but 4mm is a really comfortable needle size, too big can feel awkward and clunky. It's also the most common size needle and yarn for basic patterns from adult hats to baby booties.

Knitpro do some lovely sets where you can buy a needle case with a range from 3.5mm to 6.5mm needles already in it.

Other good accessories include a stitch and row counter, pattern holder with a magnetic ruler that you move down the pattern to keep your place, yarn bowl or project bag with a hole for the yarn to feed through, some of the magazines also do a 3 month trial subscription for £5 total for 3 issues, think it's simply knitting. They get a bit repetitive if you buy every month but have some great knitting tips and basics lessons in them so good for 3 months.

Thank you all so much, that's great to get us going, I'm going to give it a whirl with her too 😊
She hasn't really said what exactly she wants knit just yet, I reckon scarves to start off with and then she'll get a bit more ambitious once she's had some practice.

I can recommend LoveCrafts for free patterns once she / you get going. I find it much easier to find things than Ravelry.
