Wool winder and swift

Does anyone have ones they would recommend? All the reviews I find are American, not necessarily things available in the UK. Amazon reviews are either damning or delighted - about the same item!

I'd like something that can handle a range of wool weights from, say, sock to bulky, but it doesn't need to wind more than 100g at a time.

Any suggestions?

This is the one I have. It's excellent.

I have one of the little plastic ball winders you see everywhere,it's fine for domestic type use. I was lucky to find a vintage swift but if buying now I think one of the metal type ones would do the job as long as it stays up and turns freely.

Dh is getting them for me for Christmas. He likes wood, and will often choose a more traditional wooden object over its modern plastic equivalent. I think that's fine for the swift, but I'm not sure for the winder. I, too, love the things I use to be things of beauty as well as function, but wooden winders are so much bulkier than the little bolt-on ones - where would I store it? And more expensive... on the other hand it's a present.

To be honest the ball winders like this

Although plastic they are a classic design that has been around for decades and pack away in to a nice little box. Whereas the swift has to stand on a shelf looking artistic.
That is another reason to get one with a base rather than a clamp,
for instance

Depends how much space you have to store things I guess.

I just got a wooden swift for my birthday, I already have the exact wool winder NotMeNono linked above. This is the swift I got, it's a thing of beauty and I wanted a base one rather than a clamp one. It's got a good heavy base and is very tactile. Only used it once so far (with sock yarn).

It is a thing of beauty, Hazel. What are the little beaks for?

I guess they just hold it in place if you have a mammoth skein? I can't see them being much use otherwise!
