Solutions for knitted jumper with neckline too tight to go over the head.

My lovely friend has knitted a jumper for my toddler but I can't get it over her head.

Can the back or shoulder be cut and buttons added without it all unravelling?

I don't really want to tell the friend before I've solved the problem.

I've tried stretching it but no luck.

You could try unpicking the shoulder seam if it's just the size of your toddler's head that's the problem.

You can carefully cut along a seam, then add in more knitting/a fabric panel. Must only be a seam though.

I don’t see why you shouldn’t sew two lines of tape on as reinforcement to stop unraveling THEN cut. Look up steeking, which is where a cardigan is knitted in the round then cut, for details on how to sew to stop it unraveling.

Tell your friend, she’s more likely to be able to alter it unless you also are a knitter. But it depends on the structure of the jumper.

This - should be pretty easy to sort by the original knitter without any damage.

And as a knitter and crocheter, I’d much rather someone told me so I could fix it than try to fix it themselves and in the process ruined it.
