Hello everyone!
Imperial College London is looking for 8 – 12 year olds to join a writing and drawing activity. The activity can be carried out at home, and in your own time. If you are happy for your child to participate, the 10 best drawings will be digitalised by an award-winning children illustrator, while the best three drawings of characters will be brought to life with a custom-made soft toy!

We particularly welcome parents whose children have been previously admitted to a hospital, as they may have a more complex understanding and experience of the hospital environment and their stay.
The activity involves the following tasks:
-
Firstly, your kid will be asked to write a story that summarises a hospital experience. This story should be short and concise within 150 words.
-
Secondly, we ask your kid to translate your experience into story-telling and sketching activity. The story can be as long or as short as you like, and should have the following “Missions”:
a. Mission # 1: Creating a SuperBetter secret identity/character as the hero of this adventure. This can be anyone they want from any story they love.
b. Mission # 2: Recruiting allies. Every superhero has a side kick or an inner circle of friends who help save the day.
c. Mission #3: Finding the bad guys. To win the battle, kids will need to describe what they’re up against (this could be e.g. a specific health condition).
d. Mission #4: Identifying power-powers. Kids will be asked to make a list and be ready to call on them whenever the bad guys are getting the better of them.
e. Mission #5: Creating a superhero to-do list and/or obstacles to overcome. Everything on the list should be something that would make kids feel great and show off their strengths.
f. Mission #6: Creating a drawing of one of the main characters (i.e. super-hero, ally, bad guy).
Winners will be sent the prizes and asked to send a picture of their prize and their original drawing to the research team, alongside a permission for us to publish the story and pictures on e.g. Imperial College’s website or a booklet.
Please visit lisaaufegger.wixsite.com/kidsstories to get more details if needed.
The activity will be facilitated by an Imperial College research team.
Please email Lisa Aufegger if you have any further questions.
Stories (your own experience and your super-hero story) and sketches can be submitted by October 25th 2020, and winners will be informed by December 20th. In order to submit your kid's work, please send your material to the project manager Lisa Aufegger ([email protected]).
