Hi! Just wondering: how hard is it to make felt plush animals? Like in my photo? What kind of materials would I need to buy? Are the materials expensive? How time consuming is it? I want to make a mobile for my baby.

Felt is cheap...as is the filling to go inside. You do need to cut very precisely or they will look wonky because felt has no 'give' in it really, so mistakes show up a lot.

Can you sew at all? I'm a fast sewer and could make one of those in about an hour with cutting, stitching and stuffing.

No, I haven’t done any sewing before apart from some simple clothing repairs! It’s something I could learn quickly though right?

@FortunesFave have you looked into making mobiles? Hand made ones go for £100! A hour is amazing.

Neat hand stitching takes time to master Peridotty it's not something you can learn quickly no....it takes practice.

I'm not good at sewing but made similar felt animals when pregnant with DD1. They were meant for an under the sea mobile but I never finished it, so made them in to a little play scene when DD was about 2. If you have time and aren't too worried about neatness then give it a go.
I brought a multipack of felt in different colours
Some soft wadding
Already had needles and a couple of different thread colours.
Not professional looking but not difficult

Oh you do know I meant ONE animal in an hour right? Grin Not an entire mobile's worth!

You won't need much to get started. I've put some links here to give you an idea of price and what you will need (I've no affiliation with LoveCrafts!)

Felt:

Good quality thread:
www.lovecrafts.com/en-gb/p/gutermann-sew-all-thread-100m

Stuffing (you could use cotton wool as you won't need much!):
www.lovecrafts.com/en-gb/p/trimits-toy-stuffing-250g

And a few skeins of stranded cotton for the embroidery:

Your sewing will get better with practice, start simple and work your way up to the more complicated ones! Personally, I'd sew the details and embroidery on to the front piece first and then sew front and back together at the end. Have fun!

I buy my felt (brightly coloured) from the range and got bargain embroidery thread from the works.

I do Christmas decorations similarly - I think the animals will be more complicated than one made up of (say) stars or something, or I've found birds quite easy, just a button for an eye and cut out a wing.

I'm not very quick but do them in front of the TV.

You might be able to find patterns online?

This is what a 10 year old made without practice or much guidance.

I got my kids to do something similar as beginning sewing projects. Theirs were just running stitch. You could do more complex versions with either blanket or back stitch. Give it a go, doesn’t have tp be perfect enough for the Queen does it!
