Sewing a quilt - beginners advice?

I would like to make a quilt of DD's old baby clothes. I know several people offer this on Etsy/facebook etc, but 1) I can't really afford it, and 2) I fear sending off beloved things and having them lost in the post or not used properly.

However - I've never made a quilt and would like some pointers (or to be told not to try by people more experienced). My guess is that you draw around a standard template shape (rectangle or diamond) with tailor's chalk and cut them out. Sew around them onto a non-stretchy backing material (cotton? something else?) because baby grows etc are quite stretchy. Then sew these panels together either in blocks or lines depending on your design. Finally back with another piece of fabric, sandwiching some wadding in between, and edge with bias binding.

Does that sound right? The stretchy-ness is the bit that bothers me. I have done a little machine sewing, but not much. Does this sound like something an amateur can do?

You can get iron on stabiliser which yon day. Attach to the squares which is what I would
do rather than Sewing them to cotton.

Ah, brilliant, thank you!
I did not know that existed.

If you don’t want to use bias binding you can always sew together, leave a gap and then turn and top stitch. I’ve never tried to use bias binding but it looks tricky! I think it’s pretty simple task but don’t be disappointed if it’s not exactly perfect.

I would look up a tutorial on youtube - search for t-shirt quilts. To be honest i think starting with babygros is a bit of a challenge. I’ll see if i can find a good tutorial.

She uses iron on stabilizer.

Sorry - didn't get notified there had been any more responses, hence my tardiness in saying thank you!
@nectarina - yes, I agree, starting with babygrows is a bit of a challenge - unfortunately for me, I don't want to get into quilt making in general, I just want this one specific quilt of memories/to empty my spare room of overflowing old baby clothes! It's this or nothing Grin
Thanks very much for the link, looks good.

@RubaiyatOfAnyone no probs.
It’s totally doable, i would break it down into tasks. Don’t move to the sewing until you’ve got all the pieces ready. With babygros, they’re quite small so you might have to add squares of other fabric and therefore you want to be sure of the layout before you begin sewing.
