Just interested to know what little crochet projects did you do after learning the basics.

I’m thinking to start with crocheting autumn/winter hats for my 2 LOs . I’m really excited about this Grin

Ohh well done you for learning, I also taught myself to crochet almost 2 years ago now. There are lots of good you tube tutorials, I would suggest bella coco and blossom crochet, they have both been my go to.

The first thing I made was a baby blanket for my little one. I liked doing a blanket as it was a lot of easy repeating the same stitch and allowed me to get the hang of things. I’ve been addicted ever since and have many blankets/hats/socks/scarf/shawl etc.

Have lots of fun with it....to me the best bit is buying all the lovely yarn and wool. Be warned though, check your storage as you could easily become a yarn hoarder Grin

Attic 24 has some wonderful blanket designs with clear instructions and photographs of each step. Mainly using treble and double crochet. You can buy wool packs for each of the blankets from Wool Warehouse.

I started with a giant granny square blanket. This helped me get into the rhythm of crocheting and how to handle the yarn without having to worry about a pattern or anything complicated.

I started with squares for Woolly Hugs, then made a whole blanket, and then moved onto amigurumi. Haven't tried clothes yet, but I think it's one of those things that once you've mastered the basics, you can do pretty much anything. Good luck!

I'm making the seaside stashbuster blanket from the Coastal Crochet website. It was originally posted as a week-by-week crochet-along and it's almost like a sampler of rows of different crochet stitches/patterns, so you learn new ones as you go along. There are also short tutorial videos on the website for some of the stitchee. It's really good - I'm loving making it! Here's a photo of mine part-way through.

Another new crotcheter here, OP. I've had so much from learning to crotchet and although I'm a knitter, I now find crotchet easier than knitting and my hands have stopped behaving as a knitter.

I started with watching you tube videos. Bella Coco ones. Learning to use a hook and then finding my comfortable position. I started an beginning of lockdown. My first project was a baby blanket. I'm now on a granny blanket, which is just growing and growing. Crotchet works up so much faster.

There are a couple of great threads on here that are very helpful.

Have a look at naztasia.com too. She does really short videos on stitches and some great little projects to get you going.

That's beautiful, @lazylinguist

lazylinguist · 02/08/2020 18:01

Thanks BakedCam! It's a big blanket - it's taking me ages! I found crochet harder than knitting at first, but it's coming more naturally to me now and I can see why lots of people find it much easier than knitting. One advantage is that I find it's much easier to undo bits if you make a mistake than it is in knitting!

BakedCam · 02/08/2020 18:06

Much easier to undo - agree. Also less yarn use. Crotchet has brought so many benefits to me. Helped me enormously with mental health during this coronavirus.

Ordered my very first Schjeepes whirl yarn cake too. Not sure what I will do with it. For now I need to finish my granny square blanket.

How long have you to go on that beauty you're doing?

Snozzlemaid · 02/08/2020 18:11

Hi. Fellow crocheter here. I learnt as a teenager and started again at the beginning of the year.
I loved having this to keep me busy during lockdown and love learning new stitches and patterns.
And yes I've become a yarnaholic. Can't help buying more wool than I realistically need.

Medianoche · 02/08/2020 18:13

Attic24 instructions are clear and colour choices are stunning, but if you are a beginner and fairly slow at crochet (like me) then making a whole blanket with the same stitch can get pretty dull.
The coastalcrochet stash buster blanket I’ve enjoyed a lot more because you are learning so much more along the way. There are clear instructions and videos to help with any tricky bits.

Brenna24 · 02/08/2020 18:16

A second shout out for coastal crochet. I did the changing tides blanket for there. She posts week by week instructions and has you tube videos for them all.

I took that photo a while ago and have done a fair bit more, but I'm still only on about row 85 of 157 or something like that!

I need a knitting project to do too - I like to have a couple of projects on the go and I miss knitting if I'm only doing crochet!

Jedimastermama · 03/08/2020 22:17

Thank you for all your suggestions and advice, it is very much appreciated. I’ve been looking at Bella Coco tutorials and have found them very easy and straight forward to follow so far.

I’ve been reading what you’ve all been saying and I think I might start off with a little baby blanket as my first project. My youngest is 7 months. Then I will move onto little hats for them both.

I will look into Attic 24.
Haha, yep, I’ve already been eyeing up online all the yarns... no doubt I will start a collection.
If I become stuck, I know where to come for suggestions... thank you ☺️

@lazylinguist, that’s a lovely blanket.
