Hmrc question

I know you don't have to register with hmrc until you've made £1000 of sales, but does that total include postage costs when you sell something online, or is it purely the cost of the item?

It’s trading income so all monies you get in including if you charge for postage.

Honestly - just register - the accouns are so simple that if your sales end up being less than 1k it adjusts anyway. Just means you commit to do a tax return and easier to learn ho wwith little extras rather than when things get complicated

Yeah, it's the trading allowance so it's £1000 income before expenses are taken off.

Self assessment returns at that level are a piece of piss. You don't even need to break down your expenses.
