Homemade masks

Morning. I'm looking for the best, most successful homemade face masks. I'm sure there has been a thread about this before, I just can't find it! Thanks for any advice.

As a HCP I find the home made masks that people turn up to appointments wearing absolutely terrifying.
Please make sure whatever you make is 3 layer or has a pocket to put a filter in.

Ok @FatherBrownsBicycle, bit of a reaction there. If you are holding a clinic or whatever, do what ours does and issue disposable at the door.

@DustyOwl, I googled a pattern, found lots. My favourite is the pleated rectangle with pocket and optional nose bridge. Use quality fabric such as cotton, t-shirts etc,; adjustable elastic, or as I read somewhere, pony tail bands are a good size for ear loops. I also read that if you can blow out a candle wearing it, it’s too thin.

The government says any face covering is fine. If drs/hospitals expect a certain standard they should be provided. I have a job interview at a drs surgery and was told a silk scarf is fine.

There are plenty of videos on YouTube showing how to make a face mask.
I don't have a sewing machine and I found some simple ideas which were easy to hand sew.I made mine from old heavy cotton pillow cases and made them double layered with a pocket for a filter.

Brilliant, thank you. Didn't expect so many replies so quickly. My Mum has been making the ones with filters. I have found a few different patterns, I'm just not very confident with my sewing. (I know I can do it, I used to do all sorts but I have lost my mojo. Maybe I'm just using yet another delaying tactic 😂) Right, time to dust off the sewing machine!)

How so FatherBrownsBicycle ? Most people I know are doing the leave a space for a filter thing...

Home made mask or not, I would have thought if you don’t use it correctly it’s worse than useless anyway.

I didn’t want to make them, but will have too now I guess, I was planning to always have enough with me to be able to change them when needed.

I found a few but this one is my favourite - I hadn't used a sewing machine for about 30 years also if I can do it anybody can. Is underneath the video to the template. She's also done another video showing you how to actually cut and sew it and with links to different sized masks (for kids or larger adults etc). Good luck!

I made these Jesse Killian masks and they worked out well. Also like the fact that there are patterns that can be printed out. You measure the person it is for. Have made them for the whole family and worked out well.
