Sophie's Universe Blanket

I am thinking of trying this and am interested if anyone else has done it?

I have been eyeing up the Scheepes (?) stonewash yarn colours, but it would be great to know how many balls of wool/yarn it takes - wanting to make the smallest version.

Also, if you've done it, did you just use the videos or buy a pattern book? Ideally I like to have instructions in front of me, so may end up buying the book.

I'm working on an Attic 24 harmony blanket at the moment, really enjoying that. So wouldn't be embarking on this until the winter months....

I would love to see any new colour schemes for this project and know what amount of each colour you need.

I haven't done it, but have thought about it! You can buy colour packs, this is the stonewashed one:
www.deramores.com/products/scheepjes-sophies-universe-colour-pack-large-blanket-kit?fo_c=1539&fo_k=0457f0b9f2b47adffb92834a31536ce1&fo_s=awin&source=awin&awc=5626_1594705795_56cef86984d5874b88e97760898609a8&utm_source=aw&utm_medium=affiliate

If you look on the designer's blog about the blanket there should be info on amounts of yarn needed. And if you search for the blanket on Pinterest or insta you should find some other colour schemes. HTH

Thank you for that link! That's exactly the colours I'm after, but not the price (!!) Really not sure I can justify spending quite that much...

I will look at the alternatives....

The price is horrifying, I agree! Those balls are only 50g and have about 75m of yarn in though, so it's not surprising. Stylecraft Batik DK is kind of similar, and cheaper!

Wink Thanks for the tip - will have a look now.

I've made the central panel a couple of times using the book, which I much prefer to reading a pattern off a screen.

You could spread out the purchase of the yarn you want to use, it's such a beautiful project that it would be a shame to put all the work in and not have it end up how you want it to!

I've made seven full ones, and I'm currently making an amended version: parts 1-4, 20 times, and joined together for a huge, king sized blanket

It's a wonder I have any brain cells left!

daytripper28 · 04/08/2020 08:42

@TheShining Wow!! Impressive - 7 full ones!!

Were you doing them for family or on commission?

I've gone as far as getting the book. Can I ask how much wool is needed to do parts 1 to 4? And do you use the 8/4 cotton or a different type of wool?

Thanks - so many questions I know

The version made with cotton 8 is very affordable. I’ve made one with this and it’s lovely.

You need at least 3,400 metres of yarn and potentially up to 4,200 metres for Aran weight yarn.

I'm still working on mine that I started in 2015 Blush (put down for several years cos of life and kids)

Its a great pattern, really well written. You do need a lot of yarn, it's a very intricate pattern with overlay so very yarn heavy. Deidre gives all yardage for the three different sizes on her website.

I'm doing it in special stylecraft based on the cotton colours. If doing your own colours I'd pay a lot of attention to the details. There are leaves in green and roses in red etc. I just use the blog pages on my phone.

The stonewash pack is expensive but the blanket is so beautiful it is an heirloom that will be used for many years (I hope!) I wish I'd started in better quality yarn tbh.
