Experienced Crocheters: what CAN'T you crochet, no matter how hard you try?

Mine are.. Amigirumi's! Honestly I have given up. I bought loads of fluff to stuff them with, but no matter how hard I try or when I follow a pattern, it goes awfully wrong. Head shape is all wrong, wobbly neck, just looks abnormal lol. I can crochet hats, scarfs, mitts, cardigans, blankets and everything else but just not amigirumi. What about you?!

I have found secret of straight treble edges Is to not to count the turning chain as a stitch. You get a loop at the beginning of alternative rows which can be lost in the seam.

What is c2c?

I find a dc (US sc) foundation row very hard, if not impossible, I can't find where to work into very easily. I have found a fabulous method which uses a long tail (or two separate balls of yarn if that's easier). It's more like a half tc than a dc but it's so easy and comes out nice and stretchy. I do find that I need to put a stitch marker in the first stitch and then every 10 stitches, this makes it easier to count how many I've made and also makes clear which is the top edge as it comes out a bit square and would be easy to twist when working the next row into it. In fact I use one colour for the first and last stitch, a different colour for the ten-stitch markers and another colour for the 50-stitch marker. That worked brilliantly when I was doing a foundation row that was over 200 long.

C2C - corner to corner.

RaininSummer · 27/06/2020 13:42

I can't get on with corner to corner stuff. I get a right pickle with it.

Don't use a turning chain for doubles - use stacking single crochet stitches- no gap and straight edges

Explain, please! Smile

I use a standing treble crochet instead of a turning chain.
FLOrenze · 27/06/2020 16:26

That is good, thanks for that

Dilbertian · 27/06/2020 16:26

Oh my! Thanks Grin

Miltonroad · 27/06/2020 16:33

Thanks 😊 @soupdragon

Can't do amigurimi (or spell it properly probably). Well I did years ago make some angry birds but hated doing it. I see some other people's achievements and really want to try but I don't think I have the patience.

Also really basic, but still struggle with crocheting in to long chains. Can do chainless foundation easily and will always choose that over a chain and first row.

Amigurumi tips (from someone started crocheting in order to make amigurumis but took 10 years to make her first one Grin):

  • stitch markers everywhere. At the start of the round. Halfway round the round. Even at quarter points if it’s a long round. Helps with counting as it’s easier to count four section of 15 stitches than 60 in one go.
  • use a spare bit of yarn woven over and under rows to count rows. So say you know the marker yarn crosses at the start of all even rows you can easily count how many rows you’re at. You can even put a stitch marker on the marker yarn to remind you that there is where row 14 is or whatever. This is helpful when you have a long section of one colour and/or lots of repeating rows.
  • comfy hook
  • photocopy the pattern (or print it) and write all over it. Tick off rows. I write things like “marker yarn crosses at end of row 3” and “stitch marker on marker yarn is on row 25”

Before I started doing all of these it was a hopeless task and I quit loads. Now I can make toys!

I can't crochet hats...they never work. I can do all manner of blankets (been a tester for multiple designers) amiguamis and anything else crochet wise but hats just don't work

wannabeadored · 06/07/2020 12:33

Nothing.

If I'm struggling or not sure about a stitch I'll Google it .

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 06/07/2020 12:51

I can't work with lace weight. I'm a very tight crocheter and no matter how big a hook I use lace weight just comes out all wrong and tiny and knotted.
