lucykate · 21/09/2007 21:31

its a bit like plasticine, comes in lots of colours, you mould it then bake in the oven to set

kitsandbits · 21/09/2007 21:32

Oh fab - so you just buy the colurs - no painting or anything?

Is it expensive?

mind you to buy the cake toppers its £45

OP posts:
Lizzzombie · 21/09/2007 21:32

You bake FIMO in the oven for about 20 mins. It comes with instructions. Its about £2.50 a block, but it looks much smaller than you think it is.
So you think omg - thats expensive, but actually a little goes a long way.
I made a xmas tree full of decorations out of one block last year.

southeatsastras · 21/09/2007 21:33

fimo is great. i have two fimo things i made about 15 years ago and they're still colourful and sturdy. it's great stuff.

kitsandbits · 21/09/2007 21:34

the 56g ones are £1.29 on that site, do you think a 56g would do a full suit or a wedding dress?

OP posts:
southeatsastras · 21/09/2007 21:34

they look lovely and bright, because there is no painting!

kitsandbits · 21/09/2007 21:45

Do I need the varnish?

OP posts:
kitsandbits · 21/09/2007 21:45

OP posts:
kitsandbits · 21/09/2007 21:52

oh and can you paint them a bit? like a bit of pink on the cheeks ect?

say with acrylic?

thanks for the advice people

skirmish have you bought from that site? are they ok?

OP posts:
skirmish · 21/09/2007 21:55

no, haven't ordered from them - was first on google search (think i last used fimo at after-school club 20yrs ago!)...sure you could use varnish, or, if it's just cheeks/lips, perhaps you could use nail polish??

kitsandbits · 21/09/2007 22:01

Thanks

they seem ok, order went through fine

will post a pic of them when im done

OP posts:
skirmish · 21/09/2007 22:08

good luck - though fimo is great and really easy to use - if memory serves me correctly!

looking forward to seeing pics

dizzyday07 · 21/09/2007 22:36

It says in the ebay listing they are made from Fimo/Sculpey

Whizzz · 21/09/2007 22:41

Fimo is a polymer clay - shape it like play doh & they bake in the oven. Baking is quite tricky as the temperature is fairly crucial (I should imagine its harder with uneven shaped pieces like the people).
You can get loads of colours & some with 'effects' like pearly, glittery etc. You mix colours together to get various shades. I use it to make beads out of

Whizzz · 21/09/2007 22:42

Sculpey is another trade name for similar stuff (don't mix the two though as they bake at different temperatures for different lengths of time)
Primo is another make

kitsandbits · 22/09/2007 10:04

Thanks whizz - I ordered the fimo, so fingers crossed it will work out OK

kitsandbits - here's a tip : when you are working with Fimo (esepcially light colours), it will pick up any bit of fluff, different colours etc - so have 2 separate 'work areas', one for light colours & one for dark. Wash your hands between colours too.
I work on the glass from a large photo frame when rolling out etc. If you Google, there will be lots of tips & guidance on working with polyclay Good luck - let us know how you get on
