Any dressmakers around? I need help

I have made a baby romper yesterday which came out very nice..today I have applied snaps and when I tried fasten/unfasten the fabric ripped and came out of under the snap..
The fabric is cotton jersey..I removed the snaps and understandably ended up with holes..is there any way how to save this romper? Any ideas?

@onedream how are you doing with this?

I have ideas if you haven't sorted it

onedream · 22/06/2020 12:44

@KatyMac I have done some research and learned that it's good to put some interfacing before attaching the snaps..shame this was not mentioned in the pattern as I am a sewing beginner and didn't know this when I made it..
I have covered both sides with little strip of same fabric interfaced and attached new snaps..this time they hold properly and although it's not the prettiest finish, it will do for home wear Smile
I also messaged the pattern seller that she should add this information into the pattern instructions for other beginners..
What were your ideas?

Pretty much what you suggested only with a bias binding strip in a similar/contrasting colour

It is annoying when the pattern doesn't cover all the stages or assumes a step you haven't heard of or done before

onedream · 22/06/2020 16:36

@KatyMac exactly and especially as it's described as perfect for beginners..but never mind lesson learned and hopefully she will add it in instructions so no one else will make this mistake..thank you for replying to my original post and trying to help Smile

If using a stretch fabric I would sometimes use a tape to stabilise a seam for poppers which means the whole leg would stretch less but be finished better (I think - I don't do small stretch very often)

onedream · 23/06/2020 12:39

@KatyMac I have done another one since then and I just used little piece of cotton for shoulder straps for poppers and stretch interfacing for crotch poppers and it works great..

Great - any pictures?

@KatyMac this is the first crotch poppers I have done and it was a bliss with the stretch interfacing not the best pic sorry my lo doesn't stop lol

Oh bless

What lovely fabric and excellent poppers!! I have only done baby degrees with woven so I'm impressed!!

onedream · 26/06/2020 16:54

Thank you it's far from perfect but it's so comfy the fabric is very thin cotton jersey..I have only started few weeks ago but hope to make as much clothes for both of my kids as possible..the choice of fabric is amazing..no more dull boys shop clothes Smile

If you look at clothes from asda/Tesco/sainsburys they aren't perfect either :)

You just expect less from them

You can buy popper strips which work brilliantly for rompers, they are already attached to a tape so you just sew the tape onto the romper on the inside seam so it's not visible.

You do have to look around as sometimeS the tape is a bit stiff or scratchy.

The problem with putting poppers onto un-reinforced jersey is the jersey stretches and pulls the poppers out.

@KatyMac it's not just the supermarket clothes which are poor quality, I have a ted baker t-shirt I bought for my little one only because I liked the fabric print..after couple of washes it's faded so much that I hate it now as it looks so worn out..

@TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 I haven't seen these before..where can you get these strips from?

Oh yes I got some of that in an eBay haberdashery bundle from eBay

as I only buy second hand I rarely depend on one type of 'closing'
