Hi all,

So DD (6) has been bugging me for a while to teach her to use a sewing machine. Now the last time I touched one was about 16 years ago when I made the most horrendous lop sided skirt in existence for my design class. I'm utterly clueless.

My Mum has bought her a simple little sewing machine but I'm looking for recommendations on easy to read books for her (and me!) on how to get started, simple projects etc.

Any help at all would be most gratefully received!

Youtube is an excellent resource for sewing.

I would recommend getting some scrap fabric and having her practise different stitches and sewing in a straight line and getting used to her machine.

Then she could maybe hem some tea towels or make little scraps of fabric into handkerchiefs. Once she's got to grips with the machine there's no end of places she can go with it!

Maybe if you got some fat quarters of fabric she could make bunting for her bedroom or something similar?

What about simple cross stitch, like this sort of thing?

Its dated but this is still a really good book - I had it and used it with my DC - there are hand and machine sewing projects in it (some of which were clearly nicked by Cath Kidston.....)

One of the easiest things for her to make is a little skirt for herself. Get some plain material, an old sheet will do. Then cut 2 rectangles 1 and a quarter times a wide as she is. Sow up the side seams then the top and then the hem. Make it a bit longer than she needs. Then sew a row of elastic the inside of the waist and fold it over and stitch it again. She can decorate it with pockets of ribbons

Emma Hardy has a good book called my first sewing machine.
