What yarn to buy?

I want to knit a patchwork blanket, but I’ve only ever knitted using a kit, so I’ve never had to buy yarn before, and I obviously can’t nip to the shops to look at it. I’ve tried googling, but I’m going round in circles.

I want the yarn to be soft (not scratchy). I have a pair of 4.5mm needles and 6mm needles. I would prefer not to spend too much and I would like to avoid chunky wool. Any suggestions?

Hi for your smaller needles I would get a double knit wool and for the larger an Aran wool , have a look on wool warehouse or style craft web sites , for colours and they deliver too . Hobby craft do a lovely Aran which is very soft it's called soft and smooth and I think it's from the women's institute range

If happy with acrylic then style craft special do which is cheap and lots of colour options, nice and soft too.

Aldi haven't long finished a wool event, mine still has Aran left so if you food shop there might be worth looking?
Something like £4.99 for a massive ball

Drops is amazing, well priced and there are 100s of free patterns on their website.

I would say DK yarn would be your best bet with 4.5mm crochet hook. It's 100% acrylic if you don't mind that? I find it super soft to use.

I agree - Stylecraft Special DK if you are happy with acrylic. Drops merino DK Is good value if you want a natural fibre.

I made a couple of blankets from the Drops chunky merino that weren't actually too chunky - that might work for your 6mm needles.
