Whitening an old wedding dress..

Anyone done this?
My DD2 is (hopefully..if we are allowed by then) getting married end of October, in a slightly unusual rural wedding (unusual as it's in the inlaws garden and barn surrounded by many free range animals :D )

She's hoping to wear my Mum's wedding dress from 1967..it's short which is ideal given the settings, and it fits her perfectly even the shoes! However it has yellowed.
I've removed the zip and hook and eyes and and planning to soak it in an oxi type cleaner for about a day.. it has two chances! But, we have no idea what the fabric is..it looks silky/satiny with lace but no idea if real or artificial and Mum can't remember!

Any tips? It's not the end of the world if it doesn't work but we'd like to give it a go!

Napisan has been great for me in terms of whitening and brightening things. Have used it on the kids party dresses which have been taffeta and satin without problems. Can you test on a small piece of the lining or something which wouldn't matter if it wasn't there.

A friend successfully whitened an heirloom christening robe in napisan.

I couldn't get hold of Napisan but I dunked the dress in the bath for 8 hours in Oxy clean white stuff, rinsed and soaked and rinsed and gently hand washed...and... it worked!!! It might not be 100% perfect (hard to tell as it's now wet and hanging out) but it is soooo much whiter and will be wearable! I want to put the original zip and hooks back in (gulp..never done that!) but I am so pleased!

Now I have to think about the shoes... amazingly they also fit like they were made for my DD2 . Also white satin...

I used to work in a dry cleaners, and they said that most old whites would come up really well from being washed, in pretty much anything.
The danger was that the fabric can disintegrate when washed.

glad it worked for you OP
