Crochet blanket - where to start

I would like to make a beautiful crochet blanket.

I'm a good knitter but have never crocheted. I know I could scour Ravelry and order yarn and so on but to be honest, I quite fancy buying a kit.

I've looked at Janie Crowther and all her beautiful things but I think I fancy something a bit simpler.

Any ideas?

Aluminium hooks can be harder to use as they have no grip to them, so they slide around in your hand, so you have to grip harder to keep control which gives you hand ache (maybe just me). They look pretty though!

There are ones with metal heads and soft-grip rubber handles. I found these much easier to use and control personally.

Dancing, I have the rubber handled ones. Much easier to negotiate with sweaty fingers.

Wondering how everyone is getting on with their crochet! I just started the Coastal Crochet Seaside Stashbuster blanket yesterday. I'm very slow - it's going to take me aaages!

Hi all.

I'm on a very basic blanket and about half way through. My edges are wonky though, so I don't know what I'm going to do apart from bind with a contrasting ribbon on the machine which is lazy but I'm not prepared to waste the yarn.

I've gone for an anthracite grey and white at this time. Very boring but looks quite striking.

You can crochet a border around the blanket - this can hide wonky edges really well.

I'm tempted to attempt a border Soup, as a beginner I'm a bit nervous.

I've just frogged my Seaside Stashbuster blanket and started again! I knit at pretty standard tension, but I'm clearly a bit of a loose crocheter - the beginning of the blanket was looking a bit loose and lacy with the 4.5mm hook, so I've started again with a 4mm.

I was only on the second section, so I hadn't got that far, but it takes me ages so it was a bit annoying ripping it back! Much happier with it now though.

BakedCam - the blanket I'm making has a crocheted border and I'm definitely a beginner. We can do it!

What have I got to lose? I'm halfway through the blanket, I can row pretty quickly so the main body isn't too tedious. Now I've got used to the hook.

Thanks for the encouragement. I was worried I may be tempted to bind it on the machine. I want to finish even if the dog just lies on it. Which is highly likely.

That's the spirit! Grin I was so keen to get back to where I was before frogging that I crocheted for hours and now my wrist hurts. Sad I think I need to look at how I hold the hook and only work for short bursts for now.

@lazylinguist

I'm on with my blanket. I had a break for a week or son but been crashing away at it for two days. Just DC but I needed to practice edges. It is looming good so far. Plain white so I can see the yarn clearly. Then I'm going to have a go at appliqué to finish off. I will be able to practice my borders too.
