2 for the price of 1. BOGOF.

  1. If I were to use a chunkier yarn and bigger hook for a project can I just double both? Like if a project calls for a 2mm hook and a DK yarn can I go for a 4mm hook and Aran yarn? (It needs to be v close which is why the hook and yarn dont match to start with). Is Aran double the DK?
  1. Ive just discovered Tunisian crochet and i am intrigued. Do i get the straight hooks with the bobble on the end or is it better to get the hooks with the cable.

  1. Aran isn’t double the thickness of dk. It’s slightly thicker. DK seems more common in the Uk, Aran weight more popular in the Stares. 2mm seems very small for DK. If it’s amigurumi, I often use 2.5 mm for DK and 3.5 mm for Aran. There’s sites online that give you the wraps per inch. For example here. To have something twice as large you’d need a chunky or bulky weight yarn, and I’d imagine it would be huge fiberhoundyarns.com/blog/2013/12/4/yarn-weights-explained

  2. depends what you are planning to make. I would say that the cables would be more flexible as you will be able to make both large and small items. With the straight hooks you are limited by the length of the hook.

That’s really useful, thanks. I need huge but I have some super chunky but its too huge. I’ll get some different sizes and do it properly with a swatch to measure.

Knitter not crocheter but the hook/needle sizes are standard.

Standard for DK yarn is 3.5mm or 4mm needle/hook. Aran would be a 5mm or 5.5mm hook/needle.

You can play about with yarn/hook sizes to get different effects. Using a much bigger needle than recommended would make the fabric very "loose" and lacy almost looking like it had holes in it.

Just a thought, you can also double strand crochet but it takes a bit of getting used to. So just using two balls of wool at once. This produces a nice thick close result, but it uses up a lot of wool understandably. Love to see how you get on with tunisian crochet, it frightens me 🤯 😂
