I've got some suitable wool but no pattern for an icelandic/norwegian type jumper, where you knit up so far on the arms and body then work the yoke on a circular needle.
Anyone got anything like that? The wool is pretty chunky but as long as I have a pattern I can knit to the needle size of my wool and depending how it turns out it could fit either of my boys.

ah you need elizabeth zimmerman

i can tell you how to do the basic pattern, but don't think she has instructions for the patterns, do you need those too?

its very easy, iirc you cast on required no stitches for body, knit up to armsholes on circluars, then co (I think) 20% for each of the sleeves...and then I can't remember what the increases are there, something like a stitch every 5th row but...sorry. Anyway, when you have your right no of stitches you put them ALL on a big needles in correct configuration - so sleeve A - front of jumper less around 4 stitches -sleeve B - back of jumper less around 4 stitches. And then knit up, decreasing as you go to get the shoulders and neck opening you want.

It is early, and she explains it better, but also she uses diagrams which I think would make all the difference here. The book you need is "knitting without tears" and it is honestly worth the money.

Hi yes I knew all that as I knitted one of these jumpers for myself years ago! I was hoping someone might have a pattern that would tell me all the technicalities as although I'm quite competent at adapting patterns etc I'd rather have instructions for my first attempt at something. I'm a very experienced knitter and the knitting without tears looks a bit basic. I tend not to buy books as they usually only have one thing in that I want to knit.
I have a pattern somewhere for one of these sweaters in 4-ply, guess I'll have to get number crunching to convert it to the thicker wool. Thanks anyway, I'll just carry on with my current Aran project and keep looking in the meantime.
