Help! Cushion cover sewing queries

Help please!

I bought some £££ fabric as I fell in love with it. It's a velvet from Liberty & I have a 70cm length as looking in the shop 50cm seemed too little but 1m too costly!

I thought I'd make one sided cushions with them & then would have a couple of bits left over to maybe add onto cushions as a strip at the side or something.

I can barely use a machine & haven't for yonks but don't know if I can hand sew it without it looking crap. Maybe I should just get a pro to do it as I'm not feeling brave & will be gutted if I ruin it?

Also should I use some edging binding stuff if it is a goer? Thank you Grin

Does this look helpful at all?

Yes I think that will be - will try that or similar for cushion & have a look at adding a panel or shape of some sort to existing cover. Thanks!

I have velvet on one side and linen on the other. I also make them like in the hobbycraft link, zip free. For a 70cm length I would cut to 50 cm and the other side two equal panels of 40 to inter-lap.
What cushion sizes have you got?

buckeejit · 24/01/2020 22:33

I have various sizes of cushions but happy to buy others if there's a best size -50cm I was thinking of & panels of whatever is left. What would you do?

Here's the fabric -doesn't photo too well but I'm sitting here stroking it like in Austin Powers!

😂 @buckeejit it looks really cool!! Find some ochre linen for the back, that’s what I’d do.
Do the 50cm and depending on the thickness of the velvet material, use the rest for a thick band across the back, attach it to the upper most panel on the back.
Hope it makes sense. So you have two folding panels on the back, the overlapping bit on the panel would have a 20cm velvet band across, so you can switch which way you have the cushion.

Got the first one done. Not perfect but DFR. Thanks for the links & tips!

Made a load of cashmere beanie hats from old jumpers while getting used to the machine again. Off to try to hunt down some more at the charity shops tomorrow!
