As the title says or is there something better to use?

I have never made candles before and fancy having a go!

don't you make beeswax candles out of beeswax?

Ilovemyshoppingtrolley · 11/11/2019 17:47

Yes but the recipes state coconut oil too but the only coconut oil I can find is for eating or using it on the body and I wasn't sure if this would be safe to use in a candle.

Anyone?

Until you’ve mastered making candles, I wouldn’t add any coconut oil. Get used to making simple candles first, there’s a lot to learn.

So it's not just a straightforward melt the beeswax and coconut oil and pop in a mould with the wick then? Shock

Not really, no. You could do with researching which size wick for the size of the container you’re planning on using. Pouring temperatures. Are you considering adding fragrances? If you’re on Fb there are lots of groups you could join to get advice and tips. It’s a hobby I’ve enjoyed for the last 6 years or so, but well worth doing a bit of research first. I hope you enjoy making them

I've just bought soy wax, wicks and a double boiler! Making a start on a new hobby. What are your top tips?

Ilovemyshoppingtrolley · 11/11/2019 19:18

I am waiting to be approved to the beginners beeswax candle group. I have looked at the different type of wicks etc..... I have spare beeswax and thought I would give it a try.

Probably worth investing in a thermometer also. Read up on the right size wick and pouring temperatures.

ChocolateSundayGirl · 11/11/2019 19:21

Yes, definitely give it a try @Ilovemyshoppingtrolley it’s great fun

Have you ever made beeswax candles? Do you know if you have to use coconut oil or can you use paraffin wax?

Thanks so far for the help

If you use the coconut oil it will make a softer wax, which should burn longer. I personally prefer soy wax, so can’t give loads of advice on beeswax I’m afraid

Ilovemyshoppingtrolley · 11/11/2019 19:57

Ok thanks - hopefully I will soon be able to post i the FB group!

Adding anything to beeswax candles will reduce the benefits of them which largely is the fact they clean the air by releasing negative ions. If you add anything I'd go for raw coconut oil definitely not paraffin wax. Your wick is really the most important part and will determine your melt pool and burn time. Too big and your candle will burn fast, too small and it'll be swallowed up in your wax. I use beeswax a lot, mainly for homemade skincare though I do make some candles, mainly tea lights.
