Hobby for arthritic hands

My DM is 80 and has been fantastic at knitting and sewing all her life. In general is a really practical person. She lives on her own and I think sometimes gets bored. She has problems with her hands so struggles to hold needles, crochet hooks and the materials fir sewing. Does anyone have any suggestions for a new hobby I can get her into.

Bother, I was going to say my DM and her friends are giving up knitting for crochet as apparently that's easier on the hands but it sounds like she struggles with that too.

Thanks for the suggestion, but she has this problem that her fingers tend to lock after a little while, so she struggles with the repetitive movements.

Could she try ergonomic hooks / needles? I have the hands of an 80 yr old and I can only use ergo hooks or I'm in agony after using them for about 2.4 minutes

Also, Macrame? Finger knitting? Pinterest is amazing for ideas, if you search something like 'finger knitting' and scroll down, you'll see loads of related things

I was thinking something totally different that doesn't require manual dexterity.

My mum who previously hated jigsaws now swears by them. Or the diamond picture kits ?

AnnaMagnani · 19/08/2019 07:09

My mum also does loads of jigsaws. She can do those when she can't do anything else.

Ohh what's a diamond picture kit

Does she have a sewing machine? What about quilting? You can get a rotary cutter rather than scissors so that eases the strain. You can machine the whole lot, even the binding so it’s easy on arthritic hands. It’s hugely addictive in my experience - I’m slightly obsessed with it now!

Dirtyjellycat · 19/08/2019 09:23

Btw I have arthritis too, though probably not as bad as your mum’s yet.

Kaz2200 · 19/08/2019 09:31

Yes she has several sewing machines, but also starting with early stage dementia, but might suggest the quilting.

@Kaz2200 these ...

You can get them cheaply from China on something like AliExpress.

How about making greetings cards? You can buy lots of little bits and pieces to glue onto pre-cut card.

The creativity is in the combining.
