Embroidery hoop tension question

Hi. I’m new to embroidery and I can’t seem to find the answer to this question online or in the book I bought. I would prefer to use the in and out method rather than the stabbing method i.e. sewing each stitch so that the needle goes into the fabric and pokes back out again on the front of the work before you pull the thread through to complete the stitch. However once I have put the fabric on the hoop it is too taut to allow me to poke the needle back out. If I loosen enough to allow me to make a stitch like I would do if I were just sewing a normal bit of hand sewing, it seems too loose to make it with having a hoop.
Am I doing something basic wrong?

I don;t think you can do the "in and out thing". When I'm doing that sort of sewing I have one hand behind the hoop and one hand in front - left pushes the needle through the fabric, right takes it, pushes it back and so on.

I like to have my fabric really taut. Like a drum.

No point using a hoop if you want to sew like that. Leave the fabric loose, don't pull stitches tight then press with a damp cloth on the reverse. I like the idea of a hoop but it is quicker without.

Thanks for those. My book of stitches definitely talks about the importance of using a hoop then goes on to picture/describe numerous “in and out” stitches.
