Seriously though - ive no idea......sorry!

Curtain poles come in lots of different types, you can get think or thick, wood or metal, big hoops or small hoops. I have seen metal-like tracks in shops too.

fishie · 01/08/2007 13:15

i think it is really important to get good rails and fixings. i got ours from john lewis, it was £200 [aghast] inc installation for smallish bay but wow it is so much better.

i got curtains made up free by liberty, they were doing a promotion, but making them isn't too difficult unless you are doing really fiddly interlinings.

Sheherazadethegoat · 01/08/2007 13:16

john lewis is the place to be for all things curtainy. but to buy the material i would go to the cloth shop on broughton road or kings fabrics on seafield road (you are in edinburgh, yes?)

Search the internet for ideas - eg curtain solutions, or bespoke curtains or window treatments. See if anything there takes your fancy and then have a look on ebay for the more expensive curtain tracks.

or could you combine looser curtains but have thermal roller blinds underneath for the cold?

fishie · 01/08/2007 13:19

i seem to remember that most of the money was installing the thing, rails etc not that expensive themselves.

If you want curtian poles /tracks put that in google and there are loads of companies withlovely stuff to choose from .Most do free del over £50.
I have just ordered a lovely brushed steel pole with oak finnials for a 3.6 m window and it was just over £50 with the curtain hold backs.Very good quality.
Poles direct I think

You can have a metal pole with rings on (buy a good one though if you need an extendable one as othrwise the curtains get stuck). Then you just have the normal curtain tape but hang them on the lowest of the 3 sets of holes on the tape and the top of the curtains then come up over the rings

Not sure if I've explained that very well...

my problem with poles is that the curtains hang too far from the walls so light gets in all round the side.

i've resigned myself to tracks. i'd be interested to know if there were any other solutions.

Wheelybug · 01/08/2007 13:24

I wouldn't have a clue about making curtains btw - only that my Mum has made all of ours so I have picked up a bit of theory (but wouldn't be able to thread the needle let alone use a sewing machine).

Sheherazadethegoat · 01/08/2007 13:24

have been chevre.

used to have some great stuff but haven't been in in a while. what are you looking for?

Wheelybug · 01/08/2007 13:25

ah, now Warthog - that would be why dd's curtains still let in a bit of late despite having black out linings.

I think the blackout blinds you get for keeping the light out can also be thermal. I'm sure mine are - and I got them off ebay for £18 or so.

Sheherazadethegoat · 01/08/2007 13:27

just bash'em out that what we did. makes a huge difference in the winter.

Sheherazadethegoat · 01/08/2007 13:28
