I want to go to a Knitting Camp

I want to go camping somewhere nice and also knit, and make new friends who like to knit.

I think you can do this in america but, bizarely, not here.

Filly, I think you've just identified a gap in the market! Set one up yourself!

thelady · 30/07/2007 11:04

Well, we didn't do camping, but had a lovely fibre-crafts retreat here in the Borders in May. Sadly, only 5 people came.... I was planning to do it again in Oct, but had a lovely surprise (baby due in December) so have had to rethink.

I think the American 'camp' doesn't involve tents though, as for them camp seems to be more a get-away-from-it-all holiday rather than under canvas.

Keep an eye out for Woolfest in Cumbria next summer - that's meant to be rather wonderful. Hopefully I'll manage to get a retreat up and running again once the LO is a little bigger.

HonoriaGlossop · 30/07/2007 11:11

I agree thelady, cut out the tents and make it nice and luxurious and you'll get more people interested....contgratulations by the way!

FillydoraTonks · 30/07/2007 20:21

yes but if its luxurious its more pricey. I suppose caravans would be allowed...

i just went to a fabulous 4 day festival of juggling and suchlike. I think similar could be done for knitting.

I'm sure you could organise something. For me, it was quite hard finding a way to make it pay - have to cover teachers expenses, food, knitting supplies, advertising, insurance....

We had a lovely time here at the hotel, but I didn't make any money out of it, and I was one of the two teachers. Lots of work, lots of fun, but I'm still trying to run a business . If you could find a way to tag it onto an already-organised gathering then it would probably be less expensive.

I've heard of SkipNorth where they stay in a youth hostel and travel to various wool shops - google should find it - in mid-Spring.

Sorry - sometimes I think I need a "joke here" emoticon! I love my knitting, when I have time, and wish I could have made more of a success of our little get-together in May....

FillydoraTonks · 30/07/2007 20:50

yes yes there will be room for courses and suchlike

but what was SO nice about this festival was that it was just a space for people to meet and chat and share skills.

pruni i will bring you a camping chair, possibly with flying ducks on it.

you will also be requiring one of these, of course

OP posts:
FillydoraTonks · 30/07/2007 20:53

i am oscillating as to whether this is a splendid idea or not

aside from the fact that next summer i will have a small baby, in addition to the rest of my menagerie, there is also the fundemental problem that I think knitters are expecially pro-comfort.

Desiderata · 30/07/2007 20:53

You've hit on something there, Filly. You really have!

It could be like the old American patchworking societies, where you worked and gossiped together whilst in the process of producing a fantastic price of craftwork.

As Honoria says, a gap in the market?

BellaBear · 30/07/2007 20:53

love the idea of a knitting camp but second the armchairs worry

BellaBear · 30/07/2007 20:54

would it be like an extended stich n bitch? but with a better name?

FillydoraTonks · 30/07/2007 21:00

lol you can't patent ideas, ohhh no

(am married to patent geek)

but I think it could be fun. At Play loads of groups just collected together and did their various activities. I can see how this would be splendid

actually was hoping that someone woudl come on and say "oh but what about....."

OP posts:
Desiderata · 30/07/2007 21:04

.. or are you married to a patent geek?

FillydoraTonks · 30/07/2007 21:06

oh dear, I hope you are not mispronouncing patent there. its PAH-tent, NOT pay-tent.

A common mistake made by 99% of the English speaking world. It is, I am assured, they who are wrong, NOT the PAH-tent office.

OP posts:
Desiderata · 30/07/2007 21:13

Good grief

I never knew that. So it's supposed to be pronounced pah-tent?

That's one of those little facts you pick up on MN that you'll never forget. So it would appear that I have been the pay-tent geek all along!!

FillydoraTonks · 30/07/2007 21:16

yes, be very now

i am glad to have set you right

OP posts:
Desiderata · 30/07/2007 21:22

I'm glad to be set right. Of course, I'll be correcting everyone now, ad infinitum.

What a Pah-tent bore I shall be
