Making Roman Blinds

Has anyone made these and how easy are they please? They look pretty straight forward but I am not sure about what I need. I have made basic curtains before but this would be quite a large project for our conservatory.

Any help much appreciated.

Thank you.

Yes they're easier than a lot of things - I made some ages ago, but can't remember all of the details. I'll write you a list of what I think you need if you want, but it's not guaranteed!

Dingle - so easy. You can get the tape for the dowel to go through. My first one I sewed all the pockets for the dowel and then discovered the tape - see if I can get you a pic.

Then I just hand sew brass rings for the tape to go through and put an end on it.

I can sew fairly well but often baulk at making curtains BUT these blinds were fab - have done 4 so far and have the rest of the house to do.

found this guide

all the need here scroll down and you will see the tape - most people use the plastic rings but I use brass or metal.

Also need a cleat hook for the thread to go around and a pull. I just put lightweight plastic on mine.

Oh great, I will have a look later!!!

Thank you!!!!!

If you use the tape you don't need rings as there are slots along it to thread your cords through

dizzy the tape I use does not have those slots - so that will be something to check Dingle.

If you can sew a straight line you can sew a roman blind.

I just do larger pockets at top and bottom for dowel that is a bit thicker too.

Dingle, They are really easy, but try not to go with fabric with a geometric pattern or every single little wobble will show - unless you put all the pockets/tape on the lining and then v. carefully sew the fabric to it - and even then it will show if it is not 100% straight.

check out different tapes - the one I used which did have slots also took v.v.thin rods, which don't work so well on wide blinds (since it is for a conservatory I assume they are quite big)

Also don't waste your money on roman blind rails - they double the price and the things which are supposed to hold the cord don't work - wooden battens with eyes screwed in and a cleat for the cords work much better IME.

Thank you for all the input, I am sure I will try myself, unless I see an absolute bargain in the meantime. I will need 6 at about a meter wide but have time to look around as I probably won't be doing them 'til later in the year once the kiddies are back to school and some of the building work is finished. THEN I can move all my crafty stash to it's own little room and we can have the conservatory back as a family room again!!!

Ooooo...can't wait now, will be scoring the haberdashery shops now!!!

Thank you everybody.
