Hi there

Im trying to help a friend be able to crochet this little 🎅

Her mum passed away a few years ago so sadly she can't ask for the pattern

Ah can't work out how to add a photo. I'll try replying and adding it that way

Works really love to help her with this

Thank you

The long beard stitches must be some kind of puff stitch as they look puffy.

I'll give it a go later - I do like a challenge! There are similar ones on
Ravelry but none with the puffy beard bit.

Omg I'm so grateful, would love to know how you got on

Is it puffy or is it because it goes over the pink face???

That's what I can't tell until I try - it looks puffier than the puffiness that just being over the face would give. It doesn't look too difficult - it certainly won't be hard to come up with something very similar anyway.

It'll have to wait til this afternoon as I have a spaniel expecting a walk!

Hippychick78 · 13/12/2018 10:49

You're so very kind. Enjoy the walkies 😁

I've done a little mock up, apologies for the wrong colours, only yarn scraps I have atm.

I think soupdragon is right about the puff stitches. Mine aren't very neat I've never been great at them, trickier than they look!

This is a round of 20, you'll probably want to have a fiddle with the numbers but I think I've got it basically sussed.

Round of triple not double, half round of puff rest of the round in double. Pictot along the edge of the puff stitches (slightly bigger than I've done, maybe use dc ch2 dc instead of singles)

Hat is a few doubles, turn, double to second to last stitch, turn, double to end.

The rough looking edge and massive hole in the middle are covered by the hat bobble and nose pompoms

Hippychick78 · 13/12/2018 12:10

That looks fantastic, how amazing are you!!????

I'll have to sit and try work out a pattern from what you have said . I struggle with patterns and instructions xxxx I need a dummies guide literally 😂

I use attic 24s step by step pictures

So do you mean

Chain 5, make magic circle
Into circle do 20 doubles
Next round 10 doubles ten puffs

Ah this is hard I can't refer back as I'm trying to write this 😂 sorry I must appear a right idiot

I saw a woman wearing a knitted one the other day, I'm going to have a go at crocheting it.

Hippychick78 · 13/12/2018 12:55

I think they are mega cute

Gonna have a better bash at pattern when home

It's just practice! I adore attic 24 and needed pictures with my patterns until Very recently.

Dummies guide, OK.

Instead of a magic circle, because that became quite difficult to work in towards the last few puff stitches, do a chain 3 or 4, and join with a slip stitch to make a little loop. Work the 20 triple crochet through that loop of chain stitches. Fasten off. That's the pink done with.

Next join the white yarn however you like to join. I did the puff stitches first. They're a bit tricky but I only did two sort of 'passes' for each stitch.

To puff stitch, put your hook through the very centre, draw up a loop, yarn over, hook through the centre, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through all the loops on your hook. I just did this a few times (like maybe 9 or 10? Until I was happy with how far around the circle the puffy bit of beard went. Then just contined around the round with a double crochet in each treble until I got to the first puff and joined with a slip stitch. Then did a picot (attic has a good how to on that in borders) in the top of each puff stitch. Fasten off, that's white done.

Then in red, a dc in each white dc, turn, dc to second to last red stitch, turn, dc to last stitch, fasten off.

Sew in ends, glue on hat and nose pompoms and eyes

Oh I've just sat down with a pen and paper to try do exactly what you've just done, I can't thank you enough. I've never done puff that I'm aware of but will try anything with clear instructions so I'm gonna try that tonight and report back ❤️

So glad I could help! There's a couple of decent tutorials on puff stitch on YouTube too.

It's basically lots of yarn-over-ing and then pulling through eleventy billion loops on the hook, simple on paper but takes practice to get neat.

Good luck and let me know how you get on!
