can anyone suggest a substitute for this yarn from the USA?

I printed off a great pattern from Ravelry, but realised, when I tried to buy the yarn, that it was from the USA. It's Madelintosh Vintage (18st and 26 rows to 4" square on size 5 needles). It's called worsted type yarn, which is apparently between aran and DK. Can any kind soul suggest a substitute?

You can buy it in the UK but its very expensive (and beautiful!)
I'd substitute with aran if needed. Or try malabrigo rios it's also lovely but half the price

King cole do some Aran weights which substitute well for worsted weight. Also look for a thick double knit. You will need to do a search to check that you are getting the right number of stitches to the inch

This is the one I was looking at for a worsted substitute.

Budget or pricey?

If I need worsted and the weight is really crucial I tend to find one from knitpicks or yarn.com - they have some amazing deals and deliver to the U.K.

But I tend to use Drops yarns for most things these days and if gauge wasn’t totally crucial I’d use Aran as it’s generally closer but check the gauge as all yarns vary so much.

Oh, and don’t make the mistake of thinking it will look the same as the MT vintage if you use acrylic!

Oh, one more thing - quite a few U.K. places stock Cascade yarns now and they have several worsteds (I think Cascade 220 is worsted if I remember rightly)

Thank you all for the advice. I'm looking for a 'nice ' yarn. But not too expensive. After a horrible experience of knitting a jumper in a yarn that looked lovely, but I discovered pretty soon was pure acrylic and had no 'give', I prefer to pay a bit more.

Have you looked on yarnsub site?

Have a look at Knitpicks swish worsted - made some gorgeous baby clothes with swish dk and it’s mid price range. Knit picks deliver to the U.K. and are quite quick actually.

I thought 'sod it, I'll go for it' and went on the yarnsub website. Wow - it would have cost me £150 for a long cardigan. I think I'll try some of the alternatives you've kindly suggested...

Have you looked at the other projects people have made with your pattern on ravelry? You can see what other yarns people have used.
