I really like the animals in this blog here and was wondering whether anyone could make anything similar for me to buy off them? Most of the knitted animals I've seen in shops and on ebay just aren't as nice. Please help a needy monkey

these are absolutely adorable. I can't knit nearly as well unfortunately - you may just have to email her and wait for the next sale!

Gingermonkey · 18/06/2007 08:36

I have emailed her so I've got my fingers crossed for a reply. But if there's a knitter out there with some time on her hands...........

Anyone fancy a go? Or, does anyone know a good pattern for something similar?

thanks dizzy - there are some nice animals on there. I've emailed someone for a pattern of a nice cotton rabbit (not quite as nice, but still rather lovely). Now I need a knitter....can anyone help? (I will pay you for your time!)

why don't you give it a try?

Gingermonkey · 19/06/2007 07:54

I can't knit, not even a little bit. My granny tried to teach me loads of times when I was small but I never managed it. I'm left handed and I don't know whether that's the problem. I bought a book when I was at university (a each kids to knit one - very simple) but couldn't get the hang of it at all.

Teach not each - I have a sticky keyboard and my letters are sticking!

Gingermonkey - have you tried the continental/German method of knitting which many left-handers find much easier? Basically the yarn is held in the left hand and "picked up" and pulled through the stitch rather than the traditional English method where the yarn is "thrown" round the needle? Have a look here - www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/basic_techniques/knit.p hp

It would be worth trying this because if you could knit your animal yourself you'll love it even more!

DutchOma · 19/06/2007 09:13

I'd LOVE to knit you an animal Gingermonkey, but it will be weeks before I can even start. I have half a Patons shawl to finish, which will take three weeks and a cardigan for a 1 to 2 year old, which will also take a fortnight. So, see what you think, if you CAT me I can tell you when I'll have the time

Gingermonkey · 19/06/2007 10:01

Dutch - you are an angel . I'll cat you....I'm not in a rush, my friend's baby is due on sept 25th. I am making to her a felt animal taggy thing I have got my DD to help design - she's better at drawing than me!!!, and a liberty print bean frog and a couple of coat hangers (well, I'm painted a couple of hangers and decoraing them). I think as long as I have somethig to give her for christmas. I'm going to ct you now....

those animals are gorgeous - can't knit like that to save my life though so no help from me sorry

mylittlestar · 19/06/2007 10:04

I may be too late but my mum is brilliant at knitting so if you need anyone else then feel free to CAT me!

warthog · 19/06/2007 13:46

i would try the continental method as flamingtoaster has suggested. it really is a great hobby once you get the knack! you could start off with a simple scarf, and then progress onto an animal. you've got 4 months!

i'm sorry i can't help - i've got a queue for the next year...

Gingermonkey · 19/06/2007 13:54

I think I'll get round to learning one day! I just started doing a bit of cross stitch which is really relaxing, and it's quite easy. I suppose it's finding the time, isn't it? I'd quite like to go on a crash course!!!! Maybe DH can send me for christmas? I've cat you mylittlestar - thanks!

I'm completely self-taught, most of it through the Debbie Bliss book Baby Knits for Beginners and the knittinghelp.com website which has videos as I think somebody else mentioned. I've only been doing it about 18 months but I'm pretty proficient, so have a go - it's not that difficult, honestly!

bookthief · 20/06/2007 21:46

My friend taught me how to knit left handed which was a revelation. Like you, I'd tried loads of times but it all just came right when I was doing things "backwards" to normal knitters iyswim.

It works for me, but in a way I wish I'd tried the continental method as it can occasionally cause problems with following a pattern. When you get time do give it a go - you may well be pleasantly surprised!
