Making a border for my knitted blanket - ideas please!

My lovely knitted blanket is nearing completion (well, I have 15 squares left to do making a total of 50!) and I am starting to think about the border. Because it's a use-up-all-the-oddments blanket, there is no overall colour, though it is reasonably bright (the odd pastel square but not many). I've got a huge amount of denim blue wool which I think will be sufficient to do a generous border round the edge, but I'm wondering about creating some kind of small border between each square? I think it might make the whole thing "hang together" better (I know this will increase both the time it takes and the sewing up, but I'd rather it looked good than got finished quickly!)

Any thoughts on the best way to do this? I wondered about crochet between the squares; would it be possible to crochet them together? Any other ideas very welcome!

You could use the denim stuff for sewing up, but that wouldn't be very attractive I don't think. I think crochet would be the way forward for making decoration and sewing together, but I know sod all about crochet.

I do know how to make a lovely ruffled border, but it would involve a lot of picking up, and wouldn't help with the square border question.

Hmmm yes I did wonder about doing a fancy border, but the whole shebang will be generous enough to cover a single bed and I think that anything other than a plain(ish) border will be just too much work! Dd1 is very "ungirly" too so I think she might find a ruffled one too fancy (I have promised to make one for dd2 though so may come back to you at some point regarding that idea!!)

I think Marina has some crochet knowledge ... Marina ...?

I'm still going to link to the blanket with the ruffled edge .

Damn, I really do have to update that blog.

Oh, and bundle is the Queen of Crochet.

Ooh, love the blanket, NQC! I made a cardigan for dd2 using lots of ruffles (same technique) and it looks so fab, she loves it

Hopefully bundle will see this thread; if you spot her, could you point her in this direction please? No great hurry, still got 15 squares to do (and probably will be having a baby at some inconvenient point amidst all this )

Well I've just borrowed this book from the library, and I have requested this one - both have lots of borders ideas in and the first one is very good for crochet info. Hopefully I will manage to get some ideas from them as to what to do! I am definitely coming round to the idea of a crocheted edging - I think it will be easier to work than a knitted one.
