Hi. I have a gorgeous blanket that I would like to replicate as a first real crochet project but I don't know anyone who can help me identify the stitch and possibly size of wool/hook. The blanket is lovely and heavy and you can't see through it at all. Pic should be attached.

Many thanks

Oh yes, that’s super easy, it’s just alternating treble clusters, I’ll see if I can find a pattern written out for you :)

It’s the same as this pattern here:

Hard to say on wool weight / hook size - looks to me like it might be Aran weight, so around a 5mm hook size, but could also be DK as in the linked pattern (that’s what most people use for baby blankets these days)

Oh wow. Quick reply. What's a DK? I'd rather it was thicker then thinner. A pattern would be bloody brilliant!

I made the mistake of going into a posh sewing shop yesterday and now I'm ready to buy everything in sight. I should never go into craft/art shops I will end up bankrupting myself!!

DK is double knit and thinner than Aran.

It's a gorgeous blanket. I love the colours!

The Google image I can see of granny stripe have holes in is there a way of not having holes? Just do it tighter?

This stitch does not leave holes. To get the stripes change colour every two rows not every row.

PestymcPestFace · 12/09/2018 10:17

You could even use a long colour change yarn www.woolwarehouse.co.uk/yarn/caron-big-cakes-cranberry-crisp-26004-300g

There’ll always be small gaps around stitches as you’re working into gaps but shouldn’t be holes. If you want a heavier blanket I’d use Aran weight on a 5mm hook and you should have a fairly tight texture - if not, go down to 4.5mm hook

Iamnotacerealkiller · 12/09/2018 11:25

Thanks everyone. Think a tight granny stitch is the way to go using aran wool and a 5mm hook! Will go get some wool!!

Poundstretcher have Aran wool but only in traditional cream colour.

Have a look at Wool Warehouse, some great yarns - I love the Drops yarns, especially the wool and alpaca blends which are amazing value, but handwash only. They also do a superwash merino which makes great blankets but depends what colours you want as they are a bit limited
