Sewing machine help! Loose threads at back

applesauce1 · 15/08/2018 16:49

Hi all,

Any ideas why the back thread looks like this? I want to turn up the curtains for baby applesauce's nursery.

The machine is a brother LS14.

TIA

I’d try re threading from the top half of the machine again and check the needle is correct, not bent, etc. Are you threading with presser foot up?

CoperCabana · 15/08/2018 16:58

I had problems with my machine and messed with the tension and mine looked like this, so if re-threading doesn’t work, increase the tension.

Is that a very light-weight material? If re-threading and adjusting the tension doesn't work then you could try sewing it with a piece of tissue paper pinned to the back (the tissue paper that expensive clothes come wrapped in, not the tissue that you blow your nose on).

Also when you start sewing pull both threads to the back and hold onto them for the first couple of stitches.

Is the fabric synthetic, or a cotton/synthetic mix? Sometimes you can get a mess like that if you try to sew synthetic fabric with cotton thread.

Check that the needle is an appropriate size for the weight of the material.

Re-thread the machine.

Adjust the tension.

Try a different type of thread.

Try the sewing on tissue trick suggested above.

Thanks to everyone who suggested re-threading! I must have originally threaded it with the foot down. Curtains are turned up and hanging beautifully in baby's room!

The reason that this happened and why it worked when you rethreaded is the tension disks. On old sewing machines, the disks were exposed on the front of the machine and you could see when the thread was not in between the two disks. New machine encase the disks in the body work, so retread carefully and you should feel a slight purchase when it sits between the disks.

I had this on my machine, it was due to the top reel holder letting the reel turn too freely. I fixed it by winding a bit of wool around the spool to slow the reel down a bit IYSWIM.
