What do you prefer, knitting or crochet?

Or rather, what projects do you prefer using knitting or crochet for?

Just asking, because I'm a crochet addict but just thinking about giving knitting a chance Grin

Crochet, any day of the week. I can't knit for shit, despite my egg donor's efforts. I learned approx 15 years ago and have loved it since. I usually pick up a hobby and then drop it soon after but I still live crochet to this day.

I too think that knitting isn't as versatile as crochet (I can make a circle with just one hook - can you do that with knitting needles? Genuine question). That said, some things do look better knitted - some hats for example
That isn't enough to draw me to the dark side that is knitting, 1 hook is enough, I'd never manage 2 needles!

I can knit passably, but can't crochet for shit. I've tried but just can't get it!

I only knitted literally for decades; tried a bit of teach yourself crochet but just couldn't work it out. Then two or three years ago I fancied doing a non-taxing residential course and booked up for one focusing on crochet, finally understood it, and have done nothing but crochet since then.

I like crochet for being less hassle when you make a mistake; for being more flexible, especially with big projects like blankets; for being able to do lacy patterns; and for being more portable. On the other hand I still struggle with things like counting stitches in crochet, whereas obviously that's really straightforward in knitting. It's also helped that I joined a local crochet group, which I really enjoy and has given me lots of ideas. I will probably go back to knitting as well, but at the moment crochet is giving me lots of enjoyment so I'll stick with it.

Knitting. Can’t get my head around crochet.

Goodness, I just looked up Irish lace crochet. I don't think that's ever going to happen for me.

MeetOnTheledge · 12/01/2019 09:14

Crochet - but the only wearable things I make are hats, gloves and scarves, I have zero interest in jumpers, socks etc. I mainly make blankets and small items such as animals, Christmas decorations etc. Portability and the ability to pause mid row easily are key for me. I can knit but rarely do.

Knittink · 12/01/2019 09:18

I taught myself both, but find knitting much easier. I've only ever crocheted squares (some of them reasonably complicated) to make a blanket. But I still don't feel like I properly 'get' how crochet works! I do loads for a few days, then none for months, whereas knitting is regular for me.

DarienGap · 12/01/2019 09:23

Knitting. I'm reasonably competent at baby cardigans, hats and scarves.

I would love to learn to crochet. Does anyone know of any websites/YouTube etc that teach from scratch? I bought a book on it but found it too difficult.

I like Bella Coco tutorials on Youtube for crochet. However, you have to be a bit cautious about Youtube because some of the people on there use American terms - e.g. our treble crochet is their double - which all gets a bit confusing. Bella uses English terms, hooray.

I learnt to knit in 1981. I learnt to crochet (finally) yesterday, 12/01/19. They are ... different journeys for me! 😂

freddiethegreat · 13/01/2019 20:07

But very excited currently about the potential of crochet!

Slippershoes · 13/01/2019 20:55

I am just about to try crochet again after seeing a Hobbycraft help video. I feel like I had a lightbulb moment but I've misplaced the crochet hooks I have!

GenderIsAPrison · 13/01/2019 21:02

Love crochet. I can knit but not fast and I can't do it mindlessly and easily like some people can i.e. without looking....so it takes up too much concentration for it to be therapeutic.

Crocheting is more therapeutic for me....but not if it involves complicated patterns...something easy and repetitive and not too difficult to keep track of.

PestymcPestFace · 13/01/2019 21:11

I like crochet, you can do anything you can imagine.
I'm also too cack-handed to knit.

VamillaSugar · 14/01/2019 13:00

I’ve seen. Workshop advertising Arm Knitting? Is this a thing? I’ve googled it and apparently you make giant ca me knit blankets. They look amazing but how do you actually knit with your arms ? My arms are short so I’d be constantly casting off.

VamillaSugar · 14/01/2019 13:03

Sorry, the link doesn’t work Blush

PestymcPestFace · 14/01/2019 13:56

Vamilla you don't have to do it in one session. Just thread all the loops onto a broom handle and take a break. If you try it, DO NOT use merino tops, they felt very very quickly.

BubonicWoman · 14/01/2019 14:05

I'm a hooker really but i knit socks. I started because I wanted something portable. Some crochet projects are too big to carry around
I always have a pair of socks on the go. 2 together on a circular needle. I can take them anywhere

VamillaSugar · 14/01/2019 14:59

Thank you 🙏

Yup, I’ve just felted a merino jumper Blush

I might start on a scarf.

PestymcPestFace · 14/01/2019 15:11

Felting one or arm knitting one Vamilla? Wink

Verbena87 · 14/01/2019 15:14

Knitting for me, for sure. I can crochet but it’s never really grabbed me like knitting and I find there are more patterns for things I actually want in knitting, so that helps too. Also, stranded colourwork 😍.

It’s really personal though; my friend can also do both but would always go for crochet as a first choice.

VamillaSugar · 14/01/2019 16:17

Felting as in machine washed it pesty Blush

PestymcPestFace · 14/01/2019 20:53

Cold water, shit loads of hair conditioner and after a long soak you might be able to stretch it a bit.

VamillaSugar · 15/01/2019 07:24

Thank you 😊 I’ll try it.
