One mistake after another: sewing related.

I have just finished a top by Oliver and S - the Lunch box tee, view b (short sleeves). I've made it out of a sweatshirt fabric with a small amount of stretch, which should be ok, but the top seemed incredibly short. I know it is meant to be a boxy design, but it just seemed far too short. When I googled, It seemed others had had the same sort of problem, with toddler tummies on show.

I therefore added an extra 10cm of length; fine, but that looked daft. I then stitched some large ric-rac over the join, thinking it would hide it, which it has, but I made the rookie mistake of forgetting that the ric-rac has no stretch to it.

This won't be wearable, will it? And if i unpick it, how should I try and disguise this unsightly join without it very obviously looking as though I just stitched extra fabric on - which I did!

I was wondering this evening if I could salvage it by cutting yo the sides of the bottom section to create slits? These would enable a bit stretch when putting it on and off.

Could that work?

What did you use to make the white part at the collar? If you have any left, could you unpick the extra 10cm part, insert a stripe of the white, and re-attach? I think it would make it look more "deliberate design" as the colours will connect. I agree with you about oliver+s designs being short in the trunk sometimes, but I do love their fairytale dress, have made many versions and sizes of that.

That's a really good idea - although it is an old vest of mine, so quite a thin jersey against the thicker sweatshirt fabric, which might make it look a little odd?

I generally love Oliver and S, but this just seems ridiculously short if you do the B-view (without te pocket). I did wonder whether adding a large front pocket across the join would disguise it?

Here is an example of others with the same issue...

Could still work if very thin stripe or even piping? Have you got any scraps left you could try the two fabrics together and see what you think? Otherwise a pocket is a great idea, good thinking.

So you added a strip at the bottom as the garment was too short? Like a colour block.

I’d take off the trim and either:

  1. Top stitch the horizontal seam with a twin needle. This will stretch, and also conceal any stitch holes left after removing the trim. I quite often colour block to use up scraps and it can look nice. Or
  2. Also remove the added length and replace with either a white colour block +/- top stitching. Or...
  3. As above but add a ribbing band of the desired height. Might make is a bit puffy though.
